As the grandest festival besides the New Year, what are the customs of Lhasa Snowdon Festival in late August and early September?
The Lhasa Snowdon Festival has the characteristic customs of Buddha exhibition, dancing Tibetan opera, and crossing the lingka.
The Lhasa Snowdon Festival is the largest and longest of all the festivals in Tibet, and the Snowdon Festival is actually a yogurt feast.
The origin of this festival is that the Yellow Sect Ancestors set strict rules for the Gelug Sect, which required that they could not descend from April to June in the Tibetan calendar, until the end of June. And as a treat, the common people provided them with special yogurt for a week-long banquet.
Zhanfo, as the name suggests, is the Buddha statue displayed in front of the people. Every year at the end of June in the Tibetan calendar, people rush to the bottom of the hill of Drepung Monastery, Tibet's largest temple, where some lamas blow their dharma horns and others wear purple robes with golden crowns to pray for the blessings of the local people. When it was time for the 10 lamas to unfurl the statue of Jampa, it was a stunning scene. And the crowd was not crowded, people just silently in their own or for others to pray. Some say that even in torrential rain on this day, the sun shines brightly.
The second feature of the festival is the Tibetan Opera, which is a unique Tibetan opera in which actors wear various kinds of clothes and masks and perform in Lopburi for up to a week.
The third one is the Rinca, which is the equivalent of a Han Chinese picnic. This time no matter men and women, young and old will come out, this time is also very lively, set up a tent, spread mats, set out barley wine, ghee tea. Singing Tibetan songs, dancing Tibetan dance, very lively. Every corner is filled with laughter. If you are a guest, they will also toast to you. If you stay there for a long time, you can fully experience the unique snowy flavor of the Tibetan people.
