The U.S. market totaled 17,047,725 units sold for the full year 2019, down 1.3 percent from 2018. Full-year sales of pickup trucks and SUVs increased 2.6 percent to 12,234,492 units, while other passenger vehicle sales fell 10.1 percent to 4,813,233 units in 2019. Overall:
The pickup truck and SUV markets continue to expand, while the traditional car market continues to shrink.
Detroit Three - Slightly Down
As a base, the Detroit Three's performance in the U.S. market in 2019 arguably followed the broader market, with GM Group, Ford Group and FCA Group remaining at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 on the list and showing slight declines.
GM Group:?2,887,046 units | down 2.3 percent? ; Ford Group:?2,422,698 units | down?3.0 percent? ; FCA:?2,203,663 units | down?1.0%
In 2019, GM and Ford continued their strategy of 'de-emphasizing cars', while FCA Group, whose own product lineup is more focused on the pickup and SUV markets, saw relatively small declines. Meanwhile sales have been affected by the North American Auto Workers Association strike.
GM:
●? Sales slipped 6.3% to 735,909 units in the fourth quarter of 2019, hurt by the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike.
●? Chevrolet sales fell 3.8 percent to 1,958,925 for the year; GMC rose 1.5 percent to 564,946; and Cadillac increased 1 percent to 156,246. Buick increased 66 units to 206,929.
●? In the SUV market, the Chevrolet Equinox (Pathfinder) continued to be the best-selling product outside of pickup models, up 4 percent to 346,048; the Trax (Genesis before its domestic replacement) was up 29.9 percent to 116,816; the Cadillac XT4 was up 310.9 percent to 31,987; and Buick sold 102,402 units of the Encore (domestic pre-swap Encore), up 10 percent, Enclave (same name as domestic Enclave, but actually split between C1YB and C1UB platforms) up 3 percent to 51,156; Envision up 10.2 percent to 33,229; GMC?Acadia up 12.2 percent to 99,429 vehicles.
●? In the pickup market, sales of the Chevrolet Silverado slipped 1.7 percent to 575,600 units, and the GMC?Sierra rose 5.8 percent to 232,323 units.

For GM, although some SUV products have been replaced later compared to the domestic market, such as the Trax and Encore, they still achieved significant sales growth, which is inextricably linked to the North American trend of 'de-carization'. Unlike the domestic market, the Equinox is the only compact SUV in North America that can compete with Japanese SUVs. meanwhile, GM has established a hierarchical product line in the SUV market through its three brands, Chevrolet, GMC and Buick, which is conducive to continuing to consolidate sales in the future. And in the sedan market, GM will continue to maintain its luxury brand Cadillac's sedan lineup.
GM?s SUV family?
Ford:
●? Ford had a similarly dismal fourth quarter, with overall sales down 1.3 percent, including a 4.1 percent drop in SUV sales, a 41 percent drop in sedan sales and a 15.9 percent increase in pickup truck sales.
●? Ford's F-Series remains the best-selling model in the U.S., but sales slipped 1.4 percent last year to 896,526 units.
●?Sales of the Explorer fell 26.1 percent last year to 168,309 units; the Escape (domestic Impala; replacement for the domestic Renegade), which was also replaced at the end of the year, slipped 11.3 percent to 241,388 units; and the soon-to-be-disappeared sedan, the Fusion (domestic Mondeo), fell 4.4 percent to 166,045 units.
●? The Ford Edge (Renegade) was up 3.3 percent to 138,515; while the Flex had a 20.6 percent gain to 24,484; the Expedition its sales jumped 58.1 percent to 86,422; and the Ford Fiesta was up 16.3 percent to 60,148.
●? Lincoln's SUV lineup did quite well, with the Nautilus (Mariner)? /?MKX up 11 percent to 31,711 and Navigator up 4.6 percent to 18,656, although the Corsair? /?MKC sales slipped 1.6 percent to 25,815.
●?Pony car market led by Mustang: Mustang sales slipped 4.4 percent to 72,489; the Dodge?Challenger fell 9 percent to 60,997; and the Chevrolet Camaro was down 5.3 percent to 48,265.
●? Sales of the Ford GT jumped 81.7 percent to 229.
For Ford, the growth continues to be in the SUV market, especially the Expedition. full-size SUVs, similar to the pickup truck market, are a rather American and quite lucrative market. And the Fiesta is arguably bucking the market. In the luxury car market, Lincoln has also been relatively stable and steady.

FCA GROUP:
●?Ram brand was up 18 percent to 703,023 units.Jeep was again the best-selling brand, down 5 percent to 923,291 units; Dodge was down 8 percent to 422,886 units; Chrysler fell 23 percent to 126, 971; Alfa?Romeo slipped 23 percent to 18,292, still enough to outpace Fiat - down 41 percent to 9,200.
●?Ram pickup trucks outsold the Chevy?Silverado by 58,094 units to 663,694, an 18-percent increase. the ProMaster?Van rose 21 percent to 56,409 units.
●? Surprisingly, the Grand?Cherokee?(Grand Cherokee) was the Jeep brand's top seller, up 8 percent to 242,969; the Wrangler slipped 5 percent to 228,032; the Gladiator pickup made up for the Wrangler's loss to 40,047; the Cherokee (Freelander) fell 20 percent to 191,? 397 units; the Compass was down 16 percent to 143,934 and the Renegade was down 21 percent to 76,885.
●?Dodge?Charger was up 21 percent to 96,935, while Challenger slipped 9 percent to 60,997.
●?The Caravan was down 19 percent to 122,648, and the newer Chrysler Pacifica (Grand Jet) was down 17 percent to 97,705. Sales of the Chrysler 300 fell 37 percent to 29,213.
●?The Stelvio was the most popular Italian-branded model, though down 22 percent to 9,444. And the Giulia was down 24 percent to 8,704 units.
●? The Fiat 500 fell 39 percent to 3,267 units, while the 500X halved 52 percent to 2,518 units. Fiat sold 2,644 spiders, down 25 percent.
In the pickup market, the Ram's strong performance in 2019 significantly diluted the market share of Ford pickups and GM pickups. In addition to their strength in the pickup market, the Caravan and Pacifica helped the FCA Group hold onto the U.S. brand's share of the MPV market. The Jeep brand, on the other hand, has plummeted across the board in a generally bullish SUV market. Further product differentiation is what the Jeep brand needs to do, and the only way to remain competitive in the increasingly competitive SUV market is to continue to change generations and launch new products. Poor sales of Fiat will also have plans to gradually withdraw from the U.S. market, including the Fiat 500 will soon be retired. Similar to the other two, traditional brand Chrysler will also be gradually marginalized. We look forward to the subsequent performance of FCA in the North American market after its alliance with PSA.

Japanese - Ice and Fire
As the main rivals of the Detroit Three in the US market, Japanese automakers are showing a polarized performance in 2019. Toyota remains in third place, while Honda and Nissan come in fourth and fifth.
Toyota:?2,085,235 units | down 2.0 percent? ; Honda:?1,608,170?units | up 0.2 percent; Nissan:?1,345,681 units | down?9.9 percent;? Subaru: 700,117?units | up?2.9 percent; Mazda: 278,552?units | down?7.2 percent;? Mitsubishi: 121,046?units | up 2.5 percent
Toyota:
●? Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling model with sales of 448,071 units, up 4.9 percent. About 92,000 of those were hybrid models, Toyota said.
●? The Camry remained the best-selling sedan, though it fell 1.9 percent last year to 336,978 units, and the Carolla rose 0.4 percent to 304,850.
●? Prius sales slipped 20.4 percent to 69,718 units, and sales of the Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, fell 11.6 percent to 1,502 units.
●? The Toyota 4Runner fell 5.6 percent to 131,888 units; the Highlander was down 2.1 percent to 239,438 units. The Toyota Tacoma was up 1.3 percent to 248,801 units, while Tundra sales were down 5.6 percent to 111,673 units.
●? All Lexus SUVs were down except the UX, which sold 16,725 units in its first full year. the RX was down 0.5 percent to 111,036 units, while the NX fell 5.4 percent to 58,715 units.
●? The Lexus ES rose 5.9 percent to 51,336 units and the IS rose 34.9 percent to 14,920 units.
●? The Lexus LS fell 40.6 percent to 5,528 units. the LC fell 38.4 percent to 1,219 units.
Toyota's RAV4 and Corolla, which underwent replacements last year, showed strong product strength, with the RAV4 posting big gains in the traditional compact SUV market and the Corolla holding on to a slight increase despite the broader trend. With other luxury brands generally looking up, Lexus sales aren't exactly promising, with market share having slipped to 1.74 percent since FY15, and now significantly behind Mercedes-Benz-BMW.
HONDA:
●? Honda brand rose 0.3 percent to 1,450,785 units. ; The Acura brand fell 1 percent to 157,385 units.
●? The Honda CR-V was the best-selling model, up 1.4 percent to 384,168; the Pilot was down 15.4 percent to 135,008; and the Honda Passport sold 36,085.
●? Civic (Civic) sales were down 110 units to 325,650. Accord (Accord) fell 8.1 percent to 267,567 units.

●?The TLX was Acura's best-selling sedan, though sales fell 12.9 percent to 26,548. the ILX was up 30.3 percent to 14,685.
●?NSX sales jumped 40 percent to 238 units.
Honda resurrected the Passport model last year to fill the void between the CR-V and Pilot, differentiated its product mix, and continued its push into the midsize SUV market, with good results. And the CR-V and Civic have been steady sources of sales. Acura, on the other hand, continues to be steadily competitive.
Honda?SUV?lineup?(Pilot, far right, Passport, second from right)
Nissan:
●? Nissan brand sales fell 8.7 percent to 1,227,973 units, and Infiniti was down 21.1 percent to 117,708 units.
●?The Rogue (Kicks and Prowler) remained Nissan's best-selling model but slipped 15 percent last year to 350,477; the Kicks rose 149.6 percent to 58,193; the Pathfinder slipped 2.8 percent to 65,691; the Frontier fell 9.1 percent to 72, 369 units; and the Titan fell 37.5 percent to 31,514 units.
●? The Sky (Altima) was up 37 units to 209,183. The recently replaced Hennessey (Sentra) was down 13.3 percent to 184,618 units, and the Leaf was down 16 percent to 12,365 units.
●?The NV was up 18.5 percent to 200,22 units; the NV200 was up 0.8 percent to 18,768 units.
●? At Infiniti, sales leader QX60 fell 8.9 percent to 43,162 units. All Infiniti models lost sales in calendar year 19, including the QX30, down 60.1 percent to 3,229; the Q50, down 25.2 percent to 25,987; and the Q60, down 44.1 percent to 5,043.
●? The Warthog GT-R sold 331 units, down 38.5 percent.
Nissan also continues to suffer a serious Waterloo in North America against the backdrop of a major shakeup in the alliance. (Down 6.2 percent in 2018 and 9.9 percent in 2019.) In addition to the Kicks (Ridgeline) and NV series sales are both down sharply. Infiniti, for its part, is the first of the big three Japanese luxury brands to fall off the wagon.
Nissan?NV?lineup
Subaru cars:
●? Outback was Subaru's best-selling model, up 1.3 percent to 181,178 units, followed by the Forester, up 5 percent to 180,179 units.
●?Ascent sales rose 126.3 percent to 81,958 units, while sales of the Crosstrek (XV domestically) slipped 9.2 percent to 131,152 units.
●?WRX?/?STI fell 24 percent to 21,838 units, while the BRZ dropped 39.1 percent to 2,334 units. Sales of the Toyota 86?/Subaru BRZ totaled 5,732 units.
Subaru continued its growth performance (up 5 percent in 2018), with the compact SUV Forester and midsize SUV?Ascent especially taking credit. The Great Lakes commuter favorite WRX/STI, on the other hand, declined.
Subaru?Ascent
Mazda Motor:
●? Mazda remains an SUV-dominated brand as well. The best-selling CX-5 was up 2.5 percent to 154,545 units. the CX-9 was down 4.9 percent to 26,861 units; the CX3 sold 16,229 units;? Mazda sold 899 new CX-30s.
●? Mazda3 (Enclave) fell 21.5 percent to 50,741 units, and the Mazda6 (Atlas) fell 30.4 percent to 21,524 units.
●?MX-5?Miata sales fell 13.6 percent to 7,753 units. Mazda Miata?/Fiat Spider sales totaled 11,397 units, but still nearly double the number of Toyota 86?/?Subaru?BRZs.
While Mazda's reputation and cachet are growing at home, its sales are not encouraging either in North America or China. the SUVs remain relatively stable in sales, but the Mazda3, perhaps affected by the replacement, has seen a dip in sales. The Mazda6, on the other hand, is undeniably a product that's eight years old, and its product power is no longer good enough in the overall shrinking U.S. sedan market. And its competitors, the Accord and Camry, have just been replaced. And the CX-30 may be able to catch up with current trends in the U.S. market in the small SUV market and help Mazda in 2020.
Mazda?CX-30
Mitsubishi Motors:
●? Mitsubishi's best-selling model was the Outlander up 0.8 percent to 37,965 units, the Outlander?Sport down 14.1 percent to 33,644 units and the Outlander?PHEV down 32.5 percent to 2,810 units.
●?Eclipse?Cross (Eclipse) rose 107.3 percent to 19,661 units. Even Mirage sales rose 10.9 percent to 26,966 units.
As in the domestic market, after axing its sedan lineup, Mitsubishi continues to play in the market with three SUVs.
Volkswagen and Korean - slight gains
Hyundai: 688,771 units | up 3.0 percent? ; Kia: 615,338 units | up ?4.4 percent? ; Volkswagen: 363,322 units | up ?2.6 percent.
Hyundai:
●? Thanks to the Palisade and the new Santa?Fe (new Sentra), Hyundai is the best performer since 2016.
●? Despite Hyundai's shift to the premium segment, the Elantra (Elantra) remained the best-selling model, but was down 12.6 percent to 175,094 units. Similarly, the Tucson (Tucson) remained its best-selling SUV, albeit down 3.4 percent to 137,381. the Sonata (Sonata) fell 16.8 percent to 87,466 units.
●?Santa?Fe sales rose 8.8 percent to 127,373 units. Hyundai sold 28,736 Palisades.
●?Nexo sales jumped 507 percent to 267 units.
●?Veloster sales rose 18.2 percent to 12,849 units. Hyundai sold 1,077 Venues.
Like other brands, Hyundai is making a push into the SUV market, including replacing the midsize SUV?Santa?Fe and launching the full-size SUV Palisade, as well as the small SUV?Venues, which just went on sale at the end of the year.
Hyundai's SUV family
Kia: p>
●? Kia's best-selling model remains the Soul (Sauer) down 6.4 percent to 98,033 units, the Optima (K5 domestically) down 5.3 percent to 96,623 units, the Sorento (Sorento) down 11 percent to 95,951 units and the Forte down 6.2 percent to 95,609 units.
●? The bright spot was the Telluride riding high, with 58,604 units sold in its first year on the market.
●?Sportage was up 7.8 percent to 89,278; Niro sales were down 13.3 percent to 24,467; and the Stinger was down 17.5 percent to 13,861.
Kia's bright spot, like Hyundai's, continues to be its push into the SUV market. the Telluride has done well in the midsize SUV market.
Kia?Telluride
Volkswagen:
●? The best-selling model was the Tiguan, up 6.7 percent to 109,963 units, and the Atlas was up 37 percent to 81,508 units.
●? Jetta (Jetta) was up 11 percent to 100,453; Golf sales were down 12 percent to 37,393; and Passat (Maiden, Passat) was down two-thirds to 14,123.
●? The first-year Arteons, on the other hand, sold 2,449 units, while the soon-to-be-discontinued Beetle sold 17,215 units, up 19 percent.
In some ways, there's also a similarity between U.S. and Chinese consumer preferences for larger SUVs. After VW brought in the Atlas and the new Touareg, it also gave the brand a chance to make a comeback in North America. Of course, Volkswagen's sales last year were still 211,501 units below the U.S. sales record set in 1970. But it's already the highest year since 'Dieselgate'.
Luxury brands - generally bullish
BMW Group: 360,918 units | up 1.8 percent? ; Mercedes-Benz: 357,729 units | up ?1.0 percent? ; Audi: 224,111 units | up ?0.4 percent? Jaguar Land Rover: 125,787 units | up ?3.0 percent? Jaguar Land Rover: 125,787 units | up 3.0 percent; Volvo: 108,234 units | up 10.2 percent? Porsche: 61,568 units | up 7.6 percent? ; Jaguar: 21,233 units | up?105.9 percent
BMW Group:
●? BMW brand up 4.4 percent to 324,826 units; Mini down 17.4 percent to 36,092 units.
●?The X3 was BMW's best-selling model, up 14.3 percent to 70,110; the X5 rose 21.3 percent to 54,595; the new X7 sold 21,574 units; and the X1 fell 38.6 percent to 17,815.
●?The 2-Series was down 3 percent to 8,015 units; the 3-Series was up 7.3 percent to 47,827; while the 4-Series was down 40.7 percent to 18,621; the 5-Series was down 11.8 percent to 38,709; the 7-Series was up 6.7 percent to 8,823 units; and the i3 was down 20.6 percent to 4,854 units.
●?The Countryman led MINI's decline, down 20.5 percent to 13,969 units. The rest of the MINI models are down, including the Cooper?/?S?Hardtop?2?Door, down 15 percent to 8,462 units.
Similar to China, BMW completed its comeback over Mercedes-Benz in the U.S. market. In addition to the X3 and X5 achieving significant growth, the newly launched SUV flagship X7 also performed very well. Meanwhile, the sedan market was, unsurprisingly, down across the board. the MINI models also looked weak.
BMW X7
Mercedes-Benz:
●? Mercedes-Benz passenger car sales rose 47 units to 316,094. mercedes?Vans were up 9.1 percent to 41,635.
●?The GLC-Class was the best-selling model, up 5.6 percent to 73,650 units, with the GLE coming in second up 8.6 percent to 49,980 units.?
●?The C-Class was the best-selling sedan, down 18.6 percent to 49,153 units.The E-Class?/?CLS was down 13.6 percent to 40,113 units.The S-Class was down 16.4 percent to 12,528 units, while the GLS-Class was up 1.2 percent to 22,225 units.
●? In front-drive compacts, Mercedes sold 17,641 new A-Class sedans, outpacing the CLA, which fell 45 percent to 12,400.
●? Mercedes-Benz sold 4,208 AMG?GTs, up 175.9 percent.
Mercedes-Benz halted last year's sharp decline and realized a small increase with the Van. In the compact and midsize SUV markets, Mercedes remains a rival to BMW. The sedan market, on the other hand, remains unsurprisingly down sharply.
Audi:
●?The Q5 remains the best-selling model, though down 4 percent to 67,516 units. The Q8 is up 603 percent to 14,256 units; Q7 sales remain above 30,000 units. Meanwhile, Audi sold 5,369 units of the e-tron.
●?The A4 was down 24 percent to 26,435 units; the A5 was down 11 percent to 23,023; sales of the A6 jumped 69 percent to 17,807; and sales of the A7 were up 2 percent to 4,955 units.
●?The TT was up 3 percent to 1,324; but the R8 was down 36 percent to 574.
Audi is clearly lagging far behind Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the luxury car market. But even so, 2019 remains Audi's highest market share year in North America in its history, at 1.31 percent. That's thanks to its performance in the SUV market, especially mid-size SUVs like the Q7 and Q8.
Audi Q8
Jaguar Land Rover:
●? Jaguar was up 2 percent to 31,051 units; Land Rover was up 3 percent to 94,736 units.
●? As with other similar luxury brands, Land Rover's best-selling models were far from its most affordable. The Range Rover Sport was up 6 percent to 25,768 units; the Range Rover also reached 18,831 units. The Starliner (?Velar) followed at 17,087; while the Discovery, Discovery, and Evoque all sold around 10,000 units.
●? The Jaguar F-Pace followed, up 5 percent to 15,491; the E-Pace was up 7 percent to 4,782; and the XE was down 25 percent to 3,551.
●? The Jaguar F-Type was up 11 units to 2,279. sales of the I-Pace electric car outpaced it, up 560 percent to 2,594.
Despite its poor performance in China, Jaguar Land Rover still saw growth in North America. The Land Rover brand in particular saw the Range Rover lineup contribute nearly half of the brand's sales. The Jaguar brand also rose with its SUV offerings.
LAND ROVER FAMILY
VOLVO CARS:
●?The XC90 was once again Volvo's most popular model, with 35,760 units sold last year, an increase of 13.1 percent.
●?The XC60 was second at 30,578 units, down 5.7 percent, while the XC40 was up 42.1 percent to 17,654 units.
●? In the sedan market, the S60 led the way with sales of 17,526 units, up 148.4 percent.
Volvo has enjoyed a global market renaissance in recent years. Again, it is led by SUV products.
Volvo family
Porsche:
●?The Macan was Porsche's best-selling model, albeit down 3.6 percent to 22,667 units. The Cayenne was a close second, up 77 percent to 19,001.
●?The Panamera fell 17.6 percent to 6,625 units. Porsche sold 130 Taycan.
●? The Porsche 911 fell 4 percent to 9,265 units, while 718 sales dropped 35.9 percent to 3,880.
Rather incredibly, Porsche's growth in 2019 was accomplished on the back of a big increase in the replacement Cayenne. Its U.S. market share also came to an all-time peak of 0.36 percent. The midsize SUV market remains a top priority for luxury brands.
Jeans:
●?G70 sales jumped 2,810 percent to 11,901 units.
●?The G80 fell 7.4 percent to 7,094, while the G90 dropped 0.1 percent to 2,238 units.
The Jagens is a key part of Hyundai's brand upward mobility program, and their current sales are showing some competitiveness. It's also worth noting that their ads landed at the 2020 American spring game, the Super Bowl, and they used it to debut their new SUV, the GV80.
Genesis?GV80
Tesla:
●?Tesla?Model?3-?158,925?units (up?13.7 percent)
●?Tesla?Model?X-?19,225 units (down?26.3 percent)
●?Tesla?Model? S-?14,100 units (down?45.2 percent)
●? Total: 192,250 units (up ?0.3%)
Tesla made a slight gain in 2019, with its main strength coming from Q1 and Q2.Tesla now has 75% EV market share in North America, so it will have to rely on growth across the board if it wants to make any more growth in the future.
The U.S. auto market in 2019 shows the following dynamics:
●? Sales of mainstream brands have risen and fallen, while the luxury car market is bullish across the board except for the Japanese.SUVs are the lifeblood of sales for all brands.
●? In the unique pickup market, the RAM pickup truck, which has undergone a change of generation, is quite transformed, and has almost completed the reversal of the GM pickup truck.
●●The historical process of 'de-carification' still continues to push forward, and except for Japanese cars, other lines of cars are barely able to resist this macro-market change, including the Detroit Three, which are also in the process of gradually cutting down their car offerings. In the whole process of cutting, small SUV played its role in diluting the car market share, especially the market share of compact cars - small SUV in the U.S. market is a perfect alternative to compact cars, can be very good to help consumers complete the daily commute shopping and other needs. And the major brands are also trying to complete the layout of this market.
●? In the compact SUV market, still by the Japanese brand occupies the big head and firmly lock the market, because the demand of this market is still commuting and shopping, so other brands do not have much chance. On the other hand, the mid-size SUV market, which has a distinctive North American character, has fallen into increasingly fierce competition. Both the U.S., Japanese and Koreans have begun to invest a lot of product in this market, and it has led to the decline of some models in 2019, such as the Expedition and the Honda.
●? In the new energy vehicle market, Tesla is a dominant player, and its consumers, rather than wanting to buy a pure electric car, would be more straightforward to say that they just want to buy a Tesla.
●? For the U.S. market, sales of pickup trucks and full-size SUVs reflect the state of the economy throughout the year. For 2019, the pickup truck market is up steadily, and the full-size SUV market has seen a breakout hit like the Expedition; while luxury brands have seen record sales of SUVs, especially flagship SUVs. This really shows that the American people are still having a great little year in 2019 as well. At least since the economic crisis, the U.S. has been on a steady climb for the last 10 years.
