The term refers to a person in a black uniform who has been associated with a UFO (an abbreviated form of Unidentified Flying Object, a generalized term for an unidentified flying object) event. "Men in Black" is a set of science fiction comedy movies based on Lowell Cunningham's comic book of the same name. The movie was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and stars Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. Rico Baker served as the stylist in the film. The movie was released in theaters on July 2, 1997 by Columbia Pictures.

The film grossed over $587 million at the box office, significantly exceeding its $90 million production cost. A sequel, Men in Black 2, was released in 2002, and a Starship Troopers cartoon series was released by Kids' WB Warner Animation between 1997 and 2001.
