Manufacturing method of simple tenon and mortise
The simplest tenon-mortise structure is tenon, also called pin tenon and alias key tenon. The tenon-mortise structure commonly used in arc-shaped material connection is to cut the upper and lower tenons on the arc-shaped material, and then insert the parallelogram wedge nail in the middle, so that the connecting material can move up and down, left and right, and the connection is tight.
Basic practice: two tenons overlap, and the uvula on the tenon enters the groove at the same time, so that it cannot move up and down. Then cut a square hole in the middle of the lap joint, and insert a wedge nail with a square cross section, one side is slightly thicker and the other side is slightly thinner, so that it cannot move left and right. Wedges and tenons are mostly used in the frame structure of round furniture, such as incense sticks, sitting piers, round stools, etc., and the splicing of "crescent handrails" of round chairs.
In the use process, because of the large contact surface of hardwood and excellent elasticity, the tenon-mortise structure can "gain weight" or "shrink" with the whole furniture even if it expands with heat and contracts with cold, and will not cause any "thin seam" between parts.
If mortise and tenon need to be repaired due to trauma, just pour hot water on the outlet pin to separate the structure. Of course, the removal of the dovetail is definitely a technical activity, which requires the craftsman's skill level as much as the precision, meticulousness and accuracy that must be achieved when tenoning and gouging.
Open the standard model of the dovetail. It turns out that the two halves overlap each other in an inverted way (also called tenon embedding), but at the ends of the two halves, a tongue-shaped tenon is spit out, so that they can stick together after entering each other's tenon and control them to move up and down, left and right. Then use a wedge nail with an oblique square cross section and a thick head and a thin tail to pass through the middle of the lap joint and lock it. In order to prevent the furniture from loosening, the traditional technology usually uses swim bladder glue to bond, so that the two tenons can no longer be pulled open.
