The faraway Nordic region of Stockholm is covered in silver and chilly weather. 12-year-old Oskar lives in a single-parent household, where he is bullied at school, sneaks home to collect newspaper clippings about murders, or spends his nights waving a knife in a tree to vent his anger. A new kid, Ellie, comes into Oscar's life, and they slowly become friends and gradually fall in love. It is at this point that Oscar inadvertently discovers a creepy secret about Ellie.

Mobster Joe Cabot and his son, "The Good Guy". "Eddie" assembles six robbers to rob a jewelry store of natural diamonds. The six men don't know each other and have no way of even knowing each other's names. Joe, in order to maintain secrecy, names the six men Mr. White, Mr. Orange, Mr. Gold, Mr. Pink, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Blue, using color as a code name, with the stipulation that they can't disclose any personal matters between them.
During the robbery, the six were ambushed by the police, and Mr. Blue and Mr. Brown died on the spot. Mr. White returns to the intended gathering place, a warehouse, with the badly injured Mr. Orange. Later, Mr. Pink, Eddie "Good Guy" and Mr. Gold arrive and capture a policeman alive. They recall the scene of the crime and conclude that one of the six must have snitched to the police. In order to find out who the informer was, they interrogated and tortured the policeman, but still could not find out the truth. The police are not sure if they can find out the truth, but they have to be able to find out what happened.

John and Kate are devastated by an unexpected miscarriage that leaves them expecting a baby, Kate in a state of nervous breakdown, and their marriage on the rocks. In order to save their dying marriage, the couple goes to an orphanage in hopes of adopting a child. Here they meet Esther, a little girl who is a bit of a maverick. The little girl exudes a unique quality that attracts the Johns, and eventually Esther becomes part of their family. However, with Esther's arrival, all sorts of bizarre events ensue. Kate has a vague feeling that there is an unknown side behind this little girl with the face of an angel.
