Chinese Traditional Culture-Political Matters-Wuxu Reform Law

In 1898 (the year of Hundred Days' Reform), a political movement of bourgeois reformism was launched. 1895, after the defeat of Sino-Japanese Sino-Japanese War, the national contradiction became more and more serious. Kang Youwei and the other 1,300 or so graduates who took the examination in Beijing jointly petitioned the Guangxu Emperor, opposing the signing of the Treaty of Shimonoseki and advocating a change of laws to make the country stronger. The reformists organized the Strong Society and set up a school and a newspaper office to propagate the change of the law. Their activities were supported by Weng Tong-kotewall and Chen Baozheng, the leaders of the Imperial Party, and in 1897, when Germany occupied Jiaozhou Bay, Kang Youwei went to the capital and wrote a letter to the Emperor, requesting for a reform of the law and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy, and in June 1898, the Emperor accepted the idea of a reform of the law and promulgated a series of reforms and decrees for the implementation of a new government. Cixi dowager as the head of the intransigent opposition, September 21, launched a palace coup, the abolition of the New Deal, the failure of the reform.
