The Origin of Disciple's Rules

The origin of the Rules of Discipleship:

The Rules of Discipleship is a three-character rhyming text written by Li Yuxiu, an educator in the Qing Dynasty.

It is based on Article 6 of the Analects of Confucius, "Learning to Learn": "Disciples are filial in entering, fraternal in leaving, prudent and trustworthy, and kind to all. Actions have the power, then to learn the text" of the meaning of the text, with three words a sentence, two sentences a rhyme compiled. The whole text consists of 360 sentences and 1,080 words. Disciple's Rules" has a natural and smooth writing style, simple and unadorned, with far-reaching influence, and occupies an important position in the culture of the Qing Dynasty.

Influence of Disciple's Rules in Later Generations

This book explains the importance of learning, the reasoning of being a human being, and common sense of politeness and courtesy in treating others, and so on, in the form of a commonplace text and a three-word rhyme. The general narrative of the book says: "The rules of discipleship are the teachings of the sages: first, filial piety and brotherhood, second, prudence and faith, love for all, and kindness, and, if you have any spare capacity, learn the language."

There are seven subjects in this, namely, filial piety, brotherhood, prudence, faith, love for all, love for benevolence, and study of literature, the first six belonging to moral cultivation, and the latter, study of literature, belonging to intellectual cultivation.
