I. Full but not covered

Confucius visited the temple and saw a kind of tilted and easily covered vessel, which was said by the temple keeper to be the vessel of yu sitting.

Confucius said, "I have heard that the vessel for excusing oneself from sitting, is false to be interjection (tilted), neutral to be upright, and full to be covered. A wise ruler often puts it on the right side of his seat."

Confucius asked his disciple to fill it with water, and it was so.

Confucius sighed: How can anything be full and not covered?"

The disciple asked, "Dare I ask if there is a way to keep it full but not covered?"

The son said, "If you are wise and intelligent, you should keep it with foolishness; if you are successful in the world, you should keep it with concession; if you are brave and powerful, you should keep it with cowardice; if you are rich in the four seas, you should keep it with modesty. This is called the way of loss and loss."

Second, good with people

Yan Ying was a politician contemporary with Confucius, and was respected by Confucius. One day, when Yan Ying's coachman came home, his wife asked for a divorce, and the coachman did not understand.

His wife said, "I saw you driving through the doorway today in the doorway, Yan Ying is so short, he became the prime minister, and was famous among the vassals, but he is still so simple and self-satisfied; while you are eight feet tall, just his servant, but you are so spirited and arrogant, you are so unproductive, so I want a divorce."

Hearing these words, the charioteer was modest and prudent, and made great efforts. When Yan Ying knew this, he also tried to cultivate him, and later the chevron became an official doctor.

Confucius especially admired Yan Zi's way of making friends. Yan Zi made friends, and the longer the friendship, the more respectful and courteous he was, and the more respect others had for him, so that he could achieve the whole beginning and the whole end. Therefore, Confucius said from the bottom of his heart, "Yan Pingzhong is good at making friends with people for a long time, and he honors them."

Three, the gentleman's attitude

Confucius disciple Gongsun Chi went on a mission to Qi, Ran Qiu on behalf of his mother, to ask Confucius to subsidize some grain and rice.

Confucius said, "Give her six buckets and four liters."

Ran Qiu asked for more.

Confucius said, "Give her two dou and four liters more."

Ran Qiu thought it was too little and gave Gongsun Chi's mother more.

Confucius said, "Gongsun Chi went to Qi with a fat horse and light fur. I have heard that a gentleman only gives charcoal in snow, not icing on the cake."

It is the attitude of a gentleman to help others weekly and not to help the rich, and to save the young and not the poor.

Fourth, losing people and losing words

Confucius said that it is losing people to say things that can be said to others but not to say them; and it is losing words to say things to others that cannot be said to them but to say them to him.

The wise man does not lose people, nor does he lose his words.

Confucius, in the countryside, looked gentle and modest, and behaved like a man of few words; when he was sacrificing to the temple and discussing the government, he was very good at discernment and answered the questions;

When he talked with the upper doctor, he was upright and frank, and dared to tell the truth; when he talked with the lower doctor, he was eloquent and cheerful; when he was looking at the court, he was respectful and respectful but also moderate in his manner, and did not spread out and slacken his mind. It takes benevolence, wisdom and courage to speak according to the character traits and occasions of people.

V. Self-improvement

After Confucius left the state of Cao and went to the state of Song, he practiced etiquette with his disciples under a big tree. Huan, the Sima of the state of Song, wanted to kill Confucius, so he cut down the big tree.

One of the disciples urged Confucius, "Let's go quickly."

Confucius said, "Since Heaven has made me endowed with the nature of holy virtue, what can Huanzi do to me?"

No greed in good times, no joy in bad times, everything is an opportunity to hone oneself, to be righteous and self-reliant, to be thankful to Huan, and to be thankful to one's opponents.
