We rely on the pigeon's love and care, with the pigeon gliding mystery of the persistent exploration, layer by layer to reveal the scientific laws around the pigeon, and deepen the understanding of the pigeon and knowledge, we are in the field of pigeon gliding, gradually from the Kingdom of Necessity to the Kingdom of Nature, China and even the world's pigeon gliding cause, it is in this process, continue to progress and improve. In the following, I will talk about my personal opinion on the characteristics of pigeon and its gliding and some traditional and fuzzy understandings that exist in China's gliding. In fact, my personal opinion also contains and draws on the crystallization of many pigeon fanciers' explorations, and the author, to a certain extent, acts as the spokesman of these fanciers. I. The homing ability of pigeons

First of all, in order not to mystify the most mysterious problem in the world of gliding again, we should expand this proposition. It is only when we study the homing ability of birds, or the homing ability of one of the birds, the pigeon, that we can be more objective and open-minded. All birds have the ability to homing, usually, the homing ability of birds is very strong. Because the prerequisite for long-distance homing in a different place is orientation, we can say that the bird's orientation is excellent. Because the ability to argue the direction of the nest is directly related to the survival, so this ability is extremely important in the role of birds, can not be "discussed", does not matter whether there is a strong or weak, this ability is a must, can not survive without this, then, this ability to learn to get is not too late, this ability is inherent, they are --They are instinctive. Conclusion: The pigeon's ability to return to the nest in the direction of long-distance is not "magical", all birds have, not after learning and training, innate.

Instincts are useful and important, but they also follow the principle of "use in, use out", and when not used for a long period of time, they will deteriorate. Birds reproduce their offspring by incubating the eggs, and it is not conceivable that such instincts can be degraded, but the modern breed of laying hens, all of which are under human intervention, have lost their nesting ability through long-term directional breeding, i.e., they have lost the instinct to incubate their own eggs after they have been laid. Pigeons have been domesticated by humans for thousands of years, and their instincts, too, have changed through human intervention. For example, in the case of ornamental pigeons, one of the branches of the domestic pigeon, the ability of these pigeons to homing over long distances is less important. It is not so important whether these pigeons are good at long-distance homing or not. It is enough to be able to fly, to look pleasing to the eye, to be able to fly around the house and to recognize the door of the house, and the directional homing instincts inherited from the ancestors are not used for a long time and tend to deteriorate, so that, in fact, many varieties of pigeons are "made" by human beings. Meat pigeons are also new varieties of poultry made by humans, because of their large size and fatness, many meat pigeon varieties have lost or basically lost their ability to fly, and have become "landing" pigeons, or have been kept in breeding cages all their lives, so how can they talk about directional homing over long distances?

The pigeon's long-distance homing instinct has obviously been preserved. Humans have also "interfered" with pigeons, producing many distinctly different-looking breeds and strains of pigeons, which are also distinctly different from wild pigeons. Although the pigeons' homing ability has been carefully preserved, the consequences of this "intervention" are already visible. First of all, we establish the criterion that the pigeons' ability to orient themselves over long distances has not deteriorated at all. In fact, the pigeons' ability to orient themselves over long distances has been tested in practice and has little to do with the distance from the nesting place, in other words, even if the pigeons are transported to a very long distance and released from their cages, the pigeons can easily determine the direction of the nesting place. There is no absolutization of everything, as there are very few ornamental pigeons, the release performance is not worse than the pigeons, some individual pigeons, orientation ability and adapt to the psychological quality of the foreign land is very poor, flying in the wrong direction in the flying, but also the fact. Individual examples can not represent the whole, and do not have the value of discussion.

Two, about the distance

Generalized view, pigeon flying overall performance, roughly with the distance inversely proportional to the distance. In the same weather, the closer the distance is, the higher the flying speed and homing rate is, and the farther the distance is, the lower the homing rate is. 500 kilometers, the homing rate of the day in good weather in the suitable area can be up to 80%, 700 kilometers can be 60% homing on the same day, and 1,000 kilometers shows that it exceeds the general pigeon's ability to fly and the tolerance of the tolerance range, and there is a significant change in the data, and the homing on the same day is rare, and the homing rate is around 30-40% in two to three days, and then there will also be sporadic changes. The Xiang distance law is not universal, according to the closer the distance, the better the results will be, 400 kilometers better than 500 kilometers; 300 kilometers better than 400 kilometers, the facts prove that can not be so simple reasoning. Even if 400 is better than 500, faster than 500, the distance of 300 kilometers or so is against this "law", overall observation, 300 kilometers of the distance of the release of the Xiang Xiang, the speed and nesting rate greatly reduced, at the bottom of the state, how many times the verification, the fact is that this is the case. The directional flight of the pigeons has a distance "blind spot" phenomenon, an "undeserved" distance position that makes it difficult to play the directional ability properly, not subject to the normal laws and definitions that we usually think of. That is to say, the directional function of pigeon gliding has a "dead spot" that interferes with its normal performance. Recognizing this point has a significant impact on the distance we set for pigeon training and gliding stations, especially for the gliding stables, which is an important issue and a qualitative change. The level of average quality of gliding people (especially gliding decision makers) and the old habits and inertia developed over the years, make our inherent ills may continue for a period of time, but from the scientific point of view of recognizing the essence of things and the law, the change of the bad habits, it is only a matter of time.

Third, on training

The first proposition of this article has already touched on this aspect, since the long-distance directional homing is instinctive, it is logical that the pigeons should be able to homing without training. In fact, the old pigeons in the fanciers' lofts, especially those that have flown the roads before, show a more stable and sophisticated racing function. In the second and third year of their age, they go straight to 500, 700 or even 1000 kilometers without training, and sometimes they are more reliable and better than the young pigeons that are full of energy. With the growth of age, the pigeons' directional instincts are maturing, the pigeons' psychological quality is also stabilized, and without training, they can also successfully complete a certain amount of gliding tasks. Especially in the ultra-long-distance racing, who has ever sent the pigeons to a distance of 1000, 1500 or even 2000 kilometers to be specially "trained"? As long as the pigeons are of the right age, the adult pigeons will find their way back to the nest with their directional instincts. Shanghai pigeon fancier lent to the Beijing pigeon fancier's breeding pigeons, raised for many years, breeding a lot of young pigeons, once escaped from the cage, I do not know where to go, 5 days after the phone call to ask, did not see the return; 10 days after the phone call, said that the return of ah, don't worry about it! A thousand kilometers, when "training"? So, no more training? We still have to train! Why? Domestication. Domesticated birds, do not take out the training, pigeons themselves have no automatic long-distance flight desire and habit, just lifelong domestic flight, circling around the home only, do not take out the training, pigeons themselves have not "discovered" their own long-distance directional nest-finding function, the function of the "switch" do not have the opportunity to turn on. 30, 50 kilometers to go out to feed and then return to the home. The pigeons themselves don't "discover" their long-distance directional nest-finding function, the "switch" of this function doesn't have a chance to be turned on. 30 or 50 kilometers to go out to look for food and then to return to the nest can't be used, they don't have to be used, they are purely domesticated birds. If the young pigeons are never shipped out for short distance training and exercise at the right time, the pigeons don't even have the psychological quality to cope with the unfamiliar environment, so how can we talk about gliding? In terms of time, you can't wait until the pigeons have become "old ginger", instincts and psychological quality are pure, only to be taken out of the race heh. Training to be carried out, to be carried out at the right time, mainly for young pigeons, to play two roles: one for the training of psychological quality, into the cage does not panic, bumps on the road does not panic, traffic noise does not panic, crowded cages do not panic, geomagnetic induction constantly displacement changes do not panic, open the cage every time to see the unfamiliar terrain also do not panic, at this time, your pigeon, pigeons, the identity of the pigeons, only to become a real pigeon racing. One for the training of physical quality, as long as you do not put the road, 10 years of home flying, but also not as much as a short-distance training to the pigeons of the psychological, physiological two aspects of the impact caused by the big. If you understand the mystery, you will be able to control the training of pigeons and enter into the "Kingdom of Freedom" from the "Kingdom of Necessity", and the potentials of pigeon breeds will be fully realized after the reasonable training.

Fourth, on the direction of competitive flying

Under this proposition, we should establish two new understandings. In practice, we have found that pigeons around the nesting place in 360 degrees, can be homing, some places over the years, whenever the adverse gliding to change the line, change the direction, of course, the results will be obviously different, but in all directions there will be homing pigeons. There is a difference after the four sides are put, involving the second understanding of the proposition, the direction of the flight, there are suitable and unsuitable points, can not be generalized, not to mention that because of the pigeons 360 degrees of the flight are homing, set the direction of the race line at will. However, the phenomenon of arbitrarily setting the direction of the race line is still common. Or, just take into account the terrain factor, the other does not ask, this is also not in line with the requirements of the science of gliding.

From the results and data of decades of gliding practice in our continent, we have a land of 9.6 million square kilometers, suitable for pigeon gliding in the northeast, north China and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River three plains. For a long time, we have been experimenting two suitable race lines, one is the north-south two-way race line and the other is the west-east one-way race line. Among them, the seasonality of the north-south race line is also quite prominent, the spring is suitable for the north from the south, the fall is suitable for the south from the north, the longer the distance between the race, the more obvious the characteristics of the race. The limited number of 1,000-kilometer same-day races in mainland China in recent years were either on the north-south line and followed the seasonal direction, or on the west-east line, and all of them were confined to the plains. The author's research results, that the spring, south, autumn and north is in accordance with the migration of birds, according to the seasonal directional flight instincts; west to east is limited to the plains of the phenomenon of good flight, the reason lies in the pigeons' ancestor of the tendency to the sea, domestic pigeons' ancestors are a kind of birds suitable for living in the sea, according to the topography of China, the pigeons in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Xianggang, from the west to the east, i.e., inland put the direction of the coastline is the direction of the positive direction, and vice versa is the reverse direction (the 1,000-kilometer day return race of Dalian City). The pigeons released from Zhengzhou to the east, typically flying inland to the coast, the pigeons from Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai will not do badly, and this is also the case. The first is to be a good example of a pigeon's ability to get a good result.

Fifth, the relationship between eye sand and performance

Traditional viewpoint: All the information of pigeon flying can be seen from the eyes, and to be more precise, it can be seen from the eye sand. Now it seems that the number of people who have suffered from the "eye sand theory" is far greater than the number of people who have gained from the "eye sand theory". It should be noted that, in the era of ultra-long distance, the long-distance homing pigeons and their descendants have dry and old eye sands, which gives people an intuitive impression that the dryness and oldness of the eye sands are directly related to the pigeons' performance or mileage. The author's new understanding and new point of view is that the focus of the problem does not lie in the appearance of the eye sand, but in the amount of pigmentation in the pigeons themselves, which is reflected by the pigeons' eyes. Please recall, all the dry old eye sand, no matter chicken yellow or peach blossom, must be the bright color type of face sand, that is, full of pigment, the eyes are the screen reflecting the pigeon's mental condition and health, full of pigment, reflecting the pigeon's physique is good, but also indicates that under the same circumstances, the pigeon's endurance of flying is better than the other one. Most of the pigeons of the long-distance and ultra-long-distance type have a darker color, which is the same reason as the color of the eye sand, which is more pigmented. This is the same reason as the color of the eye sand, which has more pigmentation. For example, the Li Meiling line in China, the Yang Aten, Vandewegen, Van Wagenen, Van Ness, Gordon and Heumann lines in Europe, and so on in North America. The pigeons can fly a long distance and the surface gives the impression that it seems to favor the excellent orientation ability, but in fact, the character of toughness, perseverance, strong physical fitness, excellent endurance is the decisive factor, some of the fanciers understand that the majority of the long-distance and ultra-long-distance pigeons can't return to their nests, but they are lost in the location and position, mostly in the middle of the straight line path from the place where they were put up to the nest between the two sides of the narrow range, a thin line in front and behind, a thin line in front and behind. The knowledgeable people understand the principle, and take the initiative to introduce the old American Gordon line with dark rain spot and ink rain spot color, and advocate that it is suitable for sea flying, which is quite a market for a while, and this is the active increase. Commercial speculation only tell you really good Xiang, do not tell you why good Xiang, the author is straightforward, even if it is a family of words can not hold back to break this layer of windowpaper.

There is no direct correlation between eye sand and directionality, and it is probably already noticed and even accepted by most fanciers. The pigeons of foreign blood with watery eye-sand fly just as well and as fast! But Chinese fanciers have already discovered this rule: It is a fact that foreign pigeons fly fast, but they generally have poor endurance and wear resistance, and most of them are not good at flying long distances. However, the theory of the relationship between pigmentation and pigeon gliding power was independently researched and completed by the author in the motherland, and when the author's thesis on this aspect was published, Mr. Wu's masterpiece was still far from being sold on the market. Pigeon fanciers have the experience and insight that all young pigeons are inborn and fed stiffly, and when they come out of the nest, they often have pale eye sand, dull eyes, and big claws and thin shins. The soil pigeons which do not have any value in gliding, coupled with the poor physique, the eye sand pigment is often pale, the eyes are also fixed, two indicators: the physique and the spirit are not good, it is not "kill the talented goods"? Two indicators, and are seen from the eyes, when did the author say, resolutely do not look at the eye sand to? The relationship between pigeon eye sand (eye color) and gliding power (not directional ability), down to the author's point of view, I think at this point the reader pigeon fanciers already understand the basic meaning of a family of words for reference, for discussion, is not a "point of view" of the crowd.

The geographical scope of this proposition refers to China. This is a fact, we still have a lot of potential to dig out in pigeon racing, there is a lot of room for development and progress. Chinese pigeon fanciers may have noticed that the pigeon racing distance in Europe and America has rarely exceeded 1,000 kilometers in recent years.
