Not every communication needs to go through all seven OSI layers, of course, and some may even need only one of the layers that correspond to both sides.

Transfers between physical interfaces and repeater-to-repeater connections can be made only in the physical layer, while router-to-router connections can go through only three layers below the network layer.

In general, communication between the two sides takes place at the peer-to-peer level and cannot take place at the asymmetric level.
