EVD has fallen again and again, and gradually slipped to the market price.

It is understood that there is only one new EVD-8700 EVD in the domestic market at present. It was first listed in June 5438+last year 10. At that time, consumers didn't know much about the new generation of high-density laser discs, and the price of EVD single set 1998 yuan far exceeded people's psychological price. Therefore, when the EVD player first appeared in stores, it didn't get a response from the market.

Just as many home appliance stores in China gradually lost confidence in EVD and even pulled it out of stores, in June last year, Dazhong Electric City built the first "EVD HD Experience Hall" in China in its flagship store Zhongta Store. At the same time, we negotiated with Guo Fu Digital, the developer of EVD technology, and Shinco, the main manufacturer of EVD players, and the three companies reduced the market price of EVD players. The price of EVD players dropped from 1.998 yuan in June of the same year to 1.698 yuan. Since then, its price has dropped sharply several times. Until February 23 this year, EVD was promoted to the national recommended standard, and the market of EVD gradually opened, and consumers began to pay attention.

At present, the sales of EVD have increased significantly. Recently, the reporter learned in Dazhong Electric Appliance City that the national unified promotion price of the new EVD-8700 player is 998 yuan, which is the most stable price stage since EVD appeared in the home appliance market in Beijing for more than a year, with a drop of 55% compared with a year ago. According to the sales staff of Dazhong Electric, the daily sales volume of EVD is now three or four more than before, and more and more consumers come to inquire about EVD. According to relevant sources in stores, some TV manufacturers have recently signed contracts with Dazhong to use EVD to promote and demonstrate high-definition and flat-panel TVs in various stores.

According to the staff in the store, although the sales potential of EVD has increased slightly, DVD players still occupy the vast majority of the market. The main reason is that the picture effect of DVD and EVD is not obvious on ordinary TV. Only by playing on HDTV and flat-panel TV can we show the advantages of EVD more clearly and enjoy the resolution of EVD. At present, these high-definition digital products cost 10 thousand yuan. For ordinary people, you won't replace a high-definition digital TV set with nearly 10,000 yuan just because it costs less than 1000 yuan. In addition, there are few EVD discs on the market at present, and there are few ways to buy them. Compared with the DVD that can be bought everywhere, consumers prefer to choose a convenient and cheap DVD.

DVD dilemma gives birth to EVD technology

At present, China has developed into the largest DVD production base in the world, seizing the market, but the problem of DVD patent fees has been puzzling DVD enterprises in China. The relevant person in charge of the China CD Industry Promotion Committee told the reporter that as the core technologies and standards have been in the hands of foreign developers for a long time, multinational companies frequently create patent barriers by using the sharp edge of intellectual property protection. According to incomplete statistics, China's DVD manufacturers pay nearly 654.38 billion yuan in patent fees to foreign enterprises every year. Every DVD player in China must pay a patent fee of $4 to organization 6C and $5 to organization 3C. At present, the average selling price of DVD products exported from China is generally below 100 USD, and the profit is less than 5%. It can be said that the low price and high cost make it difficult for DVD manufacturers in China.

No product can dominate the market for a long time, and DVD players are no exception. Although it is a key transformation product from fuzzy technology to digital technology video equipment, once advanced technology is mastered by many enterprises, it is no longer a means to compete for market share. At present, DVD sales in the market are increasing, while the total sales are decreasing, which is a dangerous market signal. Once the price war becomes the main means of enterprise competition, it is bound to be the survival of the fittest of enterprises and technologies and the elimination of the market.

Therefore, the DVD dilemma gave birth to EVD technology, and the introduction of EVD is considered as the "golden key" to unlock the DVD patent fees in China. The success of EVD research and development is the result of China enterprises implementing independent intellectual property strategy and standard strategy. It not only owns independent intellectual property rights, but also controls the formulation and revision of standards, which is helpful for domestic DVD players to enhance their core competitiveness and change their passive state in intellectual property rights.

The industry believes that with the increasing demand for high-definition pictures, the prospect of EVD will be very broad. In addition, the 2008 Olympic Games will increase the live broadcast of HDTV, which will inevitably promote the popularity of HD players represented by EVD.

EVD must pass three levels.

Although the EVD market has improved at present, there are still three obstacles to achieve greater development in the future. First of all, it is the pressure from the shortage of film sources in EVD DVD players. Up to now, only a few dozen EVD discs can be seen in the market, which is far from the target of 300 discs by the end of 2004 promised by EVD. Although EVD DVD player can be compatible with almost all discs, there is no special EVD disc, which simply does not reflect the high-quality film effect promised by EVD, and the user's investment in EVD will lose value. When the market prospect of EVD is uncertain, most optical disc manufacturers only hold a conservative and wait-and-see attitude towards the mass production of EVD optical discs.

In July 2004, the EVD optical disc market seemed to be a precursor to prosperity. Guo Fu Science and Technology Co., Ltd. formally signed a contract with Jin Dian Group to set up Jin Dian Global Digital Technology Co., Ltd., which produces EVD special discs. It plans to invest 654.38+0 billion yuan and introduce large films in three years to completely solve the source problem of EVD films. However, when the reporter recently walked into the video store on the street in Beijing, the number of EVD CDs was very small, and many consumers still knew nothing about EVD. Just as the supply of DVD was hard to find when it was first listed, EVD also suffered the same embarrassment.

Secondly, the high price of supporting high-definition digital TV has become the bottleneck of EVD popularization. High-quality audio and video provided by EVD DVD players also need high-definition digital TV to restore. EVD's high demand for TV sets also raises the threshold for enjoying EVD movies. There is no difference between EVD movies played on ordinary TV sets and traditional DVD discs. Buying a high-definition digital TV is more expensive than ordinary TV 1000 yuan. This price difference has greatly exceeded the budget of ordinary consumers and has become an obstacle to the popularization of EVD.

Finally, the competition from other technologies makes the future of EVD more confusing. For example, the emergence of HDV products, originally HDV and EVD came from the same door, and the company that developed HDV was once one of the shareholders of EVD technology development. Although Kaicheng HD, which develops HDV technology, has repeatedly stressed that HDV is different from EVD, its technical details are difficult for laymen to understand. After all, both EVD and HDV pursue the development direction of the integration of home appliances and IT, and the goal of working towards high-definition, large-capacity, intelligent and information-based home appliances is the same.

According to industry insiders, although EVD has been one step ahead in the dispute over the standard of high-definition DVD players, HDV and HVD standards can still compete freely with it because it is a recommended standard rather than a mandatory national standard. In addition, the extent to which the adoption of standards can stimulate sales and help EVD regain the market divided by HDV and HVD remains to be tested.

It is also said that EVD is not a revolutionary leap, because it only makes some technical improvements on the basis of the original DVD player. If EVD technology had come out two years earlier, its significance would have been completely different, and it could have become a bargaining chip for exchanging technology patents with 6C Alliance, which has mastered the core technology of DVD. But now foreign DVD technology has been updated several times, and the "Blu-ray technology" announced by the new 9C Alliance can be mass-produced in three years at most, which will be a huge impact on the traditional DVD industry. In addition, under the threat of new technologies such as "blue-purple technology" introduced by Toshiba and NEC, it is really worrying how big the living space of EVD is.

In fact, regardless of the market prospect of EVD, domestic enterprise alliance * * * has great courage to challenge foreign standards by developing its own standards, and also found that the bottleneck restricting its development lies in not mastering the core technology and actively exploring solutions through various ways, which shows that China enterprises have gradually matured from blindly following international trends and price wars. However, the development of these new technologies depends on the guidance and support of the government's macro-policies, and it has yet to be tested by the market and consumers.

A person in charge of the Science and Technology Department of the Ministry of Information Industry once said: "China has a huge market, which is enough to support the development of our EVD industry." As one of the many alternative products of DVD, EVD standard, which was formulated by China's major consumer electronics manufacturers alliance, was the first to win the official title. However, analysts here said that the EVD standard is only an industry standard recommended by the "New Generation High-density Digital Video Disc System Standard" working group established four years ago and the Electronic Standards Association, and the Ministry of Information Industry is only in the stage of soliciting opinions from all parties. Real industry standards are not expected to be released until the testing of standards such as HVD and HDV is completed. The optimistic forecast is not less than 1 year.

Analysts further pointed out that if a standard is to be adopted by people, it should be open, with independent core technology, industrialized and without unreasonable patent fees, so as to attract the participation of large global companies.

"Starting from the idea of avoiding paying unreasonable royalties, it is a positive move to formulate domestic EVD standards, but if the principles of advanced, independent, open and compatible are not followed, it will be difficult for EVD standards to rank among the international standards. Advance in chaos

Since the establishment of 1999, it was publicized by the Ministry of Information Industry in July this year. The EVD alliance, which consists of nine home appliance companies, such as Shinco, SVA, Skyworth, Changhong, Amoi, Malata, BBK, Xianke and Xoceco, can be said to have been crawling forward, and the progress is very slow-the sales situation of EVD disk drives after listing was not optimistic until the beginning of this year. In addition to the high price of EVD DVD players, the lack of film sources is also a major constraint.

In terms of disk drives, EVD alliance members include Xinke, SVA, Amoi and so on. All related products have been launched, among which Shinco Group has reduced the product price from 1.998 yuan to 1.398 yuan, but compared with DVD players, its price is still not competitive.

The problem of film source is equally prominent. According to the newspaper, Jin Dian Group, a domestic real estate developer, has invested 200 million yuan with Guo Fu Digital Technology Company, the sole entity of EVD Alliance, and signed a contract to establish Beijing Jin Dian Global Digital Technology Co., Ltd., which specializes in EVD DVD production. It is planned to invest 1 100 million yuan in three years to start introducing content. However, there are many doubts in the industry about whether the company can meet the supply of film sources in the national market.

What is more difficult is that EVD is not the only country that has the strength to compete for the international standard of the next generation of digital disc recorders. Whether it is the Blu-ray DVD camp composed of Panasonic, Sony, Philips and other manufacturers, the DVD forum camp supported by Toshiba, NEC and other manufacturers, or the red light camp based on HVD and HDV, they have been fighting for international standards before.

In China, apart from the EVD alliance, HDV is built by Beijing Kaicheng HD Electronic Technology Co., Ltd., and HVD is promoted by the HVD alliance composed of Skyworth, Changhong, TCL, Malata, etc. 19 companies, among which Skyworth, Changhong and Malata are also members of the EVD alliance. Interestingly, although EVD, HVD, HDV and other standards belong to the red light camp, in order to compete for the right to speak of industry standards, the three companies sometimes fight with each other.

For example, although they all belong to the anti-Blu-ray camp, as soon as the HVD Alliance entered the market, it took the lead in launching the HVD chip designed and provided by Chen Jing Semiconductor Co., Ltd. in Silicon Valley, USA. It is understood that the intellectual property of this HVD chip belongs to the Chinese side, because Chen Jing was controlled by Shanghai Shentong Technology and Shanghai Chemical Industry Group as early as 1999. In addition, the market performance of HVD products has been better than that of EVD since they went on the market.

In view of the fact that the Blu-ray DVD camp indicated that it would enter the China market in 2007, some insiders pointed out that before Blu-ray DVD products were popularized in China, domestic alliances such as EVD, HVD and HDV should compete with each other for compatibility. "A variety of formats in the market exist at the same time and are incompatible with each other, which will inevitably lead to confusion when consumers buy. As a result, no one can do much. "

The myth of kingship

It is understood that the EVD standard not only refers to the international standards ISO 138 18(MPEG-2) and ISO 16448, but also has independent intellectual property rights in many aspects such as sound, navigation system (function expansion) and copyright protection technology, but the core chip still comes from overseas.

According to sources, Guo Fu Digital, the main member of EVD, had planned to acquire about 3% of the shares of One2 Company with VP5 and VP6 video compression technologies for 654.38+0 million US dollars, and planned to appoint general manager Hao Jie as a member of its board of directors. However, due to the delay in the approval of the relevant domestic administrative departments, we had to obtain the patent right of the above technology at a price of 50 thousand US dollars. For another American LSI logic company with EVD chips, Guo Fu established an EVD chip joint laboratory with it through negotiations, and handed over the OEM rights of the chips to the company. As a price, Guo Fu was exempted from the patent fees that should have been paid.

"Exemption belongs to exemption, but the patent fee that EVD has to pay is not less than that of DVD, because EVD players have to pay patent fees to foreign DVD patent organizations such as 3C and 6C for the backward compatibility of DVD discs. The same is true for HDV and HVD. " The source said.

Under the pressure of patent fees and price wars, nearly 30 DVD factories have stopped production or closed down in Baoan District, Shenzhen, where DVD production enterprises gather in the past six months. Some big-name DVD companies trying to enter the international market have quietly stopped and turned to high-end products such as mobile DVD, EVD and LCD TV. However, the confusion of EVD market in terms of standards and market size makes these enterprises in a dilemma.

After realizing the difficulties in the implementation of the standards, Ms. Tian Yujing, a senior engineer at the Institute of Television Electroacoustics of the Ministry of Information Industry, said that EVD standards should be recommended instead of mandatory national standards, and HDV and HVD standards can still compete freely with EVD even after the publicity period. Unlike WAPI, which is a mandatory national standard, EVD has aroused the vigilance of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission since its release, but it is not mandatory, so it has caused less backlash. The Committee even thinks that it is very unlikely that the three HD standards, EVD, HVD and HDV, will become international standards.

However, after WAPI was shelved, the pace of formulating independent intellectual property standards in China has not stopped. In addition to EVD standards, independent intellectual property standards such as TD-SCDMA, AVS, IGRS and DHWG have exposed the tip of the iceberg, and there are more China standards brewing and sneaking below the sea level, which will soon surface.
