An overview of the development of Buddhism in Korea
You said: At present, 70% of the total population in Korea are Christians! So Buddhism disappeared in Korea!
Here I advise you not to brag, or God will send you to hell. Because instead of respecting him, you insulted him. Please see the Korean Information Office of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in China to introduce the general situation of Korean religions:
The Korean Constitution guarantees religious freedom. According to the social statistical survey of 1995, 50.7% of Koreans are religious. Among the religious population, Buddhists account for 46%, followed by Protestants for 39% and Catholics for 13%. (Korean Information Office of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in China)
How did you get your data? It is shameful to talk nonsense.
Buddhism was introduced into Korea by a monk named Shundao in the pre-Qin period of China in the Koguryo era in 372 AD. In 384 AD, the monk Moronando introduced Buddhism to Silla from the Eastern Jin Dynasty in China. Buddhism is supported by the rulers of the Three Kingdoms because it is suitable as the spiritual pillar of the ruling structure with Buddhism as a single worship object and the king as a single symbol of power.
Under the sponsorship of the royal family, a large number of temples have been built in various places, and the number of Buddhists has been increasing. In the 6th century, Korean monks and craftsmen went to Japan with scriptures and religious relics, where they formed the foundation of early Buddhist culture.
Silla unified the Korean peninsula in 668. At this time, although the policy of governing the country by Confucianism was still followed, Buddhism was regarded as the state religion. Because the royal family was good at Buddhism, Buddhist art and temple architecture flourished during this period. This Buddhist temple and other Buddhist buildings were built in Gyeongju, the capital of Silla. Buddhism, as the state religion, began to decline because the nobles indulged in luxurious life. Later, Buddhism founded Zen Buddhism, which advocated penance and enlightenment.
Subsequent rulers of the Koryo dynasty were more enthusiastic about supporting Buddhism. During the Koryo period, Buddhist art and architecture continued to prosper due to the full support of the nobles. During this period, the Koryo Tripitaka appeared. 1392, Li Chenggui revolted and became the founding monarch of North Korea. He tried to eliminate the influence of Buddhism on the government and took Confucianism as the guiding principle of governing the country and maintaining ethics. During the five-century rule of the Korean dynasty, any efforts to revive Buddhism were strongly opposed by Confucian scholars and officials.
19 10 After Japan occupied Korea and made it a colony, it tried to assimilate various Buddhist factions in Korea with Japanese Buddhism. However, all these attempts ended in failure, which led to Koreans' renewed interest in their Buddhism. In the past few decades, Buddhism in Korea has experienced a development process of trying to adapt to the changes of modern society. Some monks came to the city to spread Buddhism, but the vast majority of monks still strictly abide by the precepts and practice meditation in the mountains. At present, a large number of monks are engaged in Buddhist academic research in universities at home and abroad. The practice methods of meditation and meditation in Korean Buddhism are gradually emerging. Many foreigners study meditation in Song Guang Temple in Jeollanam-do and temples in Seoul and other cities, and meditate with Korean monks.
