How to Integrate Chinese Studies into English Teaching

First, the promotion of China culture to college English teaching

As an important carrier of culture, there is an inseparable harmonious relationship between language and culture. As we all know, learning a foreign language is inseparable from the cultural and social soil on which the target language depends. However, the important role of the source language and culture, that is, the traditional culture of China, in foreign language teaching has not attracted enough attention from both sides. China's traditional culture is in a weak position of "aphasia" in the process of foreign language teaching. This phenomenon deviates from the ultimate goal of foreign language teaching. Under the background of China's integration into the world and the promotion of China's "soft power", foreign language teaching should not only enable learners to master a tool to understand the outside world, but also have the important mission of spreading China culture to the world. In the process of foreign language teaching, it is not only the need of cross-cultural communication, but also the need of spreading and carrying forward Chinese excellent traditional culture to the world. At the same time, this dialectical awareness of language and culture learning enables students to understand and learn western language and culture, and at the same time, they can also deeply appreciate the profoundness of China's traditional culture.

At present, an important reality of college English teaching is that the target language culture is in an absolute strong position in the teaching process, and foreign language teaching has largely become a single input of western culture. In cross-cultural communication, students lack the ability to express or explain things, phenomena or concepts unique to China culture in English, which directly leads to obstacles in cross-cultural communication. Therefore, the author believes that China's college foreign language teaching should not stop at the one-way input of western language and culture, but should be rooted in the environment and soil of China's traditional culture, and undertake the important mission of spreading and exporting China's traditional excellent culture to the world while learning and introducing western excellent culture. This can not only improve learners' intercultural communication ability, but also maintain the independence of China's traditional culture and resist the impact of western culture.

Second, the teaching status of China culture

College English Syllabus clearly states that students should be familiar with China's traditional culture and pay attention to cultivating college students' ability to promote Chinese excellent traditional culture in foreign languages. More and more foreign language teachers are fully aware of the promotion of cultural teaching to language teaching. However, the current reality is that the mother tongue culture, that is, China traditional culture, is in an absolute weak position in foreign language teaching, and there is a serious problem of "China cultural aphasia". In the process of teaching, the one-way input of western culture is the main thing. There is little information about China's traditional culture in college foreign language textbooks. Not only do students lack the ability to express unique things, phenomena or concepts in China culture in foreign languages, but even many teachers do not pay enough attention to the importance of China culture in foreign language teaching. Many majors don't offer courses related to China culture, and many universities even cancel the most basic college Chinese course. China culture is in a weak position of "losing its voice".

The important reality of China students learning foreign languages is that learners are rooted in the soil and atmosphere of China culture. They should first be familiar with and identify with the traditional culture of China, and strive to cultivate their cross-cultural communication ability to express their mother tongue culture in a foreign language. Only in this way can they have a deeper understanding of the target language culture, strengthen their awareness of cross-cultural learning and improve their cross-cultural communication ability. Liu Runqing once said: "When learning a foreign language, it is impossible to be completely divorced from your mother tongue. There are some common phenomena between languages, which will cause great losses if we don't refer to and compare with our mother tongue. ④"

Thirdly, the ways and methods of integrating China culture into college English teaching.

Teachers and organizers of college English teaching should clearly realize that foreign language teaching in colleges and universities bears the heavy responsibility of promoting China's traditional culture to the world. The improvement of China's international political and economic status and increasing international influence should be accompanied by the improvement of China's cultural soft power and the export of China's culture. In cross-cultural communication, the English used by China people should reflect the culture of China, not the culture of Britain and America. College foreign language teaching must not only focus on the target language and target language culture, but should be an important platform for the export of China's traditional culture. Wang Zongyan once pointed out: "Cross-cultural communication is communication between two sides, not one-sided learning. ⑤ "Integrating China's traditional cultural elements into foreign language teaching can enable students to have a deeper understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western cultures and enhance their awareness of cross-cultural communication by comparing the two cultures. The author believes that the integration of China culture into college foreign language teaching can be achieved through the following ways:

1) Expand and enrich the teaching content, and reflect cultural contrast and diversity in foreign language teaching.

College foreign language teaching should change the present situation of single input of target language culture, and integrate and enrich China traditional cultural elements into the teaching content. China cultural elements should be integrated into language learning such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation to improve students' ability to express China culture in foreign languages.

2) Reflect the theme of foreign cultural exchange in the design of teaching materials, and actively introduce China's excellent traditional culture to the world.

College foreign language textbooks should appropriately strengthen the cultural elements of China and change the dominant position of the target language culture. For example, while introducing western culture, we can compare it with China culture, or compile the classic English versions of China culture chapters into teaching materials, or assign homework about the English version of China culture in after-school homework, and recommend students to read the classic English version of China Culture Reader to strengthen the export and exchange of China culture.

3) Add elements of China traditional culture into university courses to strengthen students' awareness of national traditional culture.

Courses such as China traditional culture, China traditional classic reading guide and comparison between Chinese and western cultures can be offered to enhance students' national cultural awareness and national pride.

4) Strengthen the cultural literacy of foreign language teachers in colleges and universities in China.

Foreign language teachers in colleges and universities are not only organizers and implementers of foreign language teaching, but also important guides to improve students' cultural literacy of Chinese studies. Therefore, it is particularly urgent and important to improve teachers' own Chinese and cultural literacy. We can broaden the ways for foreign language teachers in colleges and universities to learn China culture by organizing teachers to observe and communicate.

5) The foreign language expressive ability of China traditional cultural elements is included in the test.

Strengthening the examination of cultural elements in China is an important way to urge students to actively study China culture. Through reading, translation and writing, China cultural elements are integrated into the examination of foreign language expression and cognitive ability.

6) Broaden the channels for students to learn China traditional culture through the second class and elective courses.

Foreign language teachers can cooperate with teachers majoring in Chinese language and culture through multiple channels to guide students to read the English version of China Culture, or recommend movies on related topics, so as to broaden students' cross-cultural learning channels through multiple channels.

In a word, college foreign language teaching should find its own position, strengthen the integration of China traditional cultural elements in teaching, and enhance students' intercultural communication ability rooted in China cultural soil. Teachers-oriented and students-centered, we should strengthen the elements of China's excellent traditional culture in textbook compilation, curriculum setting and academic evaluation, improve students' intercultural communication ability and enhance the international influence of Chinese culture.
