Seek books that introduce ancient patterns and symbols

Lee Zehou's "The Course of Beauty": it talks about some ancient Chinese culture and totem worship, and there are some diagrams listed in there to analyze, especially a chapter that explains in detail the inner meaning of each dynasty's diagrams. But there's a version that comes with explanations of the motifs, and a version that's text-only.

More specialized is Liang Sicheng's book "The History of Chinese Sculpture", which is based on his lectures in class, talking about a large number of architectural treasures from the Xia, Shang, Zhou and the Qing Dynasty, with illustrations. But the aesthetic significance is not as profound as Li Zehou.
