Chinese Moving Customs

(1) "Six Groups of Items" to Enter the House Before moving, the following six groups of daily necessities should be prepared:

1. Rice: Use a "rice pail" to fill it with rice to the eighth full. Inside the rice bucket, put a red packet containing banknotes, tea leaves and nine copper coins (or coins).

2. Water: Use a bucket to fill it seven full with water (water should be taken from the "old house").

3. Chopsticks: Prepare a new set of chopsticks for each member of the family, an even number is good.

4. Pair of dustpans and brooms with a red cloth tied on top.

5. Prepare a new set of underwear, pillow and bed sheet for each person in the family.

6. Old stove, pots and fans.

The above six items will be moved into the kitchen of the new house at the auspicious time, and then the other items will be moved into the new house. If you are afraid of not being able to adapt to the new environment after moving, you can bring a piece of soil and ginger from your old house into the new house. For those who are going to travel abroad, it is very effective to bring some rice and soil with them to prevent them from not getting used to the water and the soil. Before moving out of the old house, one should leave an old wallet with five coins in the room, two eggs and a red packet in the kitchen (with a cypress leaf and an even-numbered banknote in the red packet). When the "last item" or "last person" is leaving the house, remember to sprinkle some rice in front of the door of the house before locking it.

(2) Worshiping the "Foundation Master" of the new house After moving into the new house, it is customary to worship the "Foundation Master" (Diji) at dusk on the afternoon of the same day. It is said that there is a god of the earth or a god of the house in every house, and that worshipping the "foundation master" will keep the house safe. It is also said that the "foundation master" is the first occupant of the house, commonly known as the "founding ancestor". It is believed that when a house is occupied by someone else or falls into the hands of someone else, it is necessary to worship this person in order to avoid trouble. Legend has it that the "foundation master" is not very tall and should be worshipped in front of the kitchen or at the "back door" of the new house, and the table where the offerings are placed should not be too high.

The offerings for the worship of the "Foundation Master" are as follows:

1. A bowl of rice, a meat, a vegetable and a soup.

2. Three glasses of wine.

3. A pair of red candles.

4. Three joss sticks.

5. "Paper money" such as longevity money, mowing money and landlord's money.

When more than one-third of the three joss sticks have been burned, you can burn paper money (longevity money, kariyaki money, and landlord's money) next to the main entrance of the new house. After burning the paper money and packing up the offerings, the ceremony of worshipping the "foundation master" is completed.

8. Moving should be strictly prevented from moving to the "fetal god". If a woman in your family is pregnant, try not to move.
