The Old Man and the Seagull Original Article

A moving story has been circulating in Cuihu Lake, a stone's throw away from Dianchi Pond. Since the 1980s, a lonely old man has been wandering around the busy Cuihu Lake on winter mornings every year, and for more than 10 years he has scrimped and saved to feed the seagulls, which are like his children, with his meager pension, and to protect them from passers-by.

In 1995, when the Siberian white elves flew to Kunming in the eleventh winter, the seagulls old man died. Behind him, the only valuable thing in the old man's house is a few eggs, the old man can not afford to eat, ready to steam egg buns to feed the seagulls. "Tea" magazine and Yunnan "man and nature foundation" in the old man often go to Cuihu Lake sent an obituary, informing people, but also inform the bird: "seagulls old man died on December 20, 1995, aged 71 years old, for the retired workers of the Kunming Chemical Plant ... ...Although the old man died, but hope that the seagulls often fly, may the old man's wish with the seagulls."

The obituary and a photo of the old man feeding the seagulls for the last time were placed in the place where he often went to feed the seagulls, and many people signed the old man's photo. People put the signed last photo of the old man on the lawn, ready to spread food and feed the seagulls one more time on behalf of the old man. Just put the old man's photo, not to spread food, the unexpected happened - a group of seagulls suddenly boiling paper, circling around the old man's statue of flipping and circling, even chirping, screaming and flying posture are different from the usual, as if they know what happened.

The gulls flapped their wings rapidly, taking turns to set in the air in front of the old man's statue, as if they came to admire the remains of the relatives. The old man on the statue, frozen in one of their most familiar movements. Soon, a group of white gulls have landed, actually in front of the old man's statue and behind the neatly stood in two rows, standing still, like the old man's wake of the white-winged angels. This scene lasted for a while, and those who saw it could not imagine that it was just a coincidence. When the people were finally ready to put away the effigy, the seagulls swooped down on the effigy as if it had exploded. They chirped with their beaks wide open and their wings fluttered so close that the people collecting the photographs subconsciously scrunched up their bodies, and it was with great difficulty that they were able to extricate themselves from the swirl of white flying around them. After that, the gulls hovered over the effigy for a long time, like a wake for the old man, and like a send-off for the old man ......

Human Education Edition

It was an ordinary winter day. When my friend and I met at Cuihu Lake, the seagulls were flying lively.

It was easy to recognize the old man in the crowd feeding the seagulls. His back was hunched, he wore a faded and outdated cloth coat, carried a faded blue cloth bag, and even the big plastic bag for bird food was faded. My friend told me that the old man walks more than 20 miles every day from the outskirts of the city to Cuihu Lake, just to give the seagulls meals, with the seagulls companion.

The place where there are fewer people is his territory to feed the seagulls. The old man placed the cookie crumbs very carefully on the fence at the edge of the lake, took a step back, picked up his beak and called out to the gulls. Immediately, a flock of gulls came in response, sweeping the area clean in a few strokes. The old man walked along the railings and put, the gulls according to his rhythm of rise and fall, rows of a fluttering white, flying into a piece of sound and colorful music.

In the seagulls' chirping, the old man sang something in a staccato manner. Listen carefully, it turned out to be intimate (nì) changed the tone of the local language - "one-legged", "gray head", "red beak " "Old Sand" "Princess" ......

"You gave the seagull a name? " I couldn't help but ask. The old man looked back at me, still bent over the seagulls, "Of course, which one has a name." "You recognize them?" The same white wings flashed so quickly in the sunlight that I doubted the old man could see them.

"Look at them! That one with the rings on his feet is Old Sandy!" The old man proudly pointed it out to me, and he suddenly shouted out into the water, "One-legged! Old Sandy! Get up for a second!"

In response, two seagulls leapt up from the water and flew towards the old man. One seagull's feet were really shining with metallic light, and the other flew over to peck at the old man's hand. It only has one foot and had to flap its wings to keep its balance when it landed. It appears to be one-legged, and the old man speaks affectionately to it as he feeds it.

Talking about seagulls, the old man's eyes immediately came alive.

" The seagulls are the most affectionate and careful. The year before last, there was a seagull, flying away from Kunming the day before, in a row on my hat fell five times, I thought it was playing with me, and later realized that it was with me to say goodbye. It did not come last year, this year also did not come ...... seagulls are auspicious birds, happy birds! Ancient people say 'white gulls fly with poetry', more than ten years ago, the seagulls came, I know we are lucky to come. Look at their little looks! 啧(zé)啧...... "Seagulls heard the old man call, immediately flew over, and surrounded him, attracting passers-by to stop and watch.

The sun was in the west, and the old man's plastic bag was empty. "

It's getting late, and in a little while they'll have to go back. I heard that they are resting in Dian (diān) Pond, but unfortunately I can't go." The old man looked at the gulls circling high in the sky, his eyes with hope.

Friends told me that for more than 10 years, the old man must come every day in winter, and the seagulls are like relatives.

I didn't expect to see the old man die more than ten days later, someone suddenly told us.

Hearing this news, we seemed to see the old man and the seagulls in the Cuihu Lake together again ...... We enlarged the old man's photo of the last feeding seagulls and brought it to the Cuihu Lake. Unexpected things happened - a group of seagulls suddenly flew, circling around the old man's statue of flipping and circling, chirping, screaming and posture is very different from the usual, as if something big had happened. We were so surprised that we hurriedly backed away from the old man's picture to make way for the seagulls.

The gulls flapped their wings rapidly and took turns flying into the air in front of the old man's statue, like relatives who had come to pay their respects. The photo of the old man silently watching the gulls circling around, watching with his companion for how many winters "children" of the ...... After a while, the seagulls have landed, actually in the old man statue before and after the stand into two rows. They are standing still, like white-winged angels for the old man's wake.

When we had to collect the statue, the seagulls swooped over to the statue as if they had blown up the camp. They chirped so loudly, their wings fluttering so close, that we had a hard time getting out of this flying white swirl (xuán) (wō).

......

At the funeral for the old man, we carried the effigy slowly toward the hearth. The old man was carrying that blue cloth bag, cupping his mouth as if he was still calling out to the seagulls. In his heart, must be the flying gulls.
