Types of Calligraphy
1. Oracle Bone Script: 14th century BC to 11th century BC, during the Shang Dynasty. This is the earliest mature writing in China, mainly used for inscriptions on tortoise shells and animal bones, for recording state politics and religious ceremonies. The oracle bone inscriptions were the prototype of calligraphy and laid the foundation for the later development of calligraphy.
2. Jinwen: 11th century B.C. to 7th century B.C., Western Zhou period. Jinwen refers to the text cast on bronze, mainly used to record the nobility's lineage, deeds and homilies. Jinwen inherited the characteristics of oracle-bone inscriptions, with richer brushwork, and accumulated valuable experience for the subsequent evolution of calligraphy.
3. Small Seal Script: 3rd century BC, during the Qin Dynasty. The Small Seal Script was standardized by Qin Shihuang after he unified the six kingdoms to strengthen the unified management of the script. With regular and dignified glyphs and rounded lines, the small seal script is an important form of ancient Chinese calligraphy.
