What is the difference between orthodox Taoism and folk legalists?

Orthodox Taoism is different from folk legalists in belief, ceremony and organization.

Orthodoxy refers to the traditional, formal and classic factions in Taoism, whose beliefs and practices follow the classics and traditions of Taoism. Orthodox Taoism emphasizes the importance of personal practice and moral practice, pays attention to internal practice and external practice, and pursues the realm of immortality and consciousness.

Folk legalists refer to some folk and informal Taoist factions, and their beliefs and practices may not strictly abide by Taoist classics and traditions. Folk law teaching may pay more attention to practical results and application, and pursue the functions of exorcising evil spirits, treating diseases and saving lives.

Organizationally, orthodox Taoism usually has strict religious norms and regulations, while the organizational form of folk legalists may be loose.

In short, there are differences in beliefs, rituals and organizations between orthodox Taoism and folk legalists, but there is no clear boundary between them. Some folk legalists may also be guided or influenced by orthodox Taoism.
