Zhang Hongqi's Xiangya Hospital Spine Surgery Department

The Department of Spine Surgery of Xiangya Hospital of Central South University is one of the earliest departments in China to carry out various types of spine surgery, as early as the 1970s, it was the first to carry out artificial vertebral body replacement, which was extremely difficult at that time in China. In 1984, Prof. Liu Yumo, one of the founders of spine surgery of China, was famous ------ for his work, and he was the first one to introduce the Luque rod technology, which was the first one to be introduced into Europe and the United States, for the treatment of scoliosis. Scoliosis; and that year successfully organized the first domestic "National Scoliosis Orthopaedic Course"; at the same time, for the epidemiology of scoliosis, prevention, treatment, etc., a census of more than 1,000 secondary school students, summed up: so far, is still the most authoritative epidemiology of scoliosis in the country.

Founded in 1906, Xiangya Hospital is the earliest western hospital in China to carry out surgical operations. 1952, the hospital singled out orthopedics from major surgery and created the earliest orthopedic specialties in China; as one of the sub-specialties of orthopedics, the spine surgery department of the hospital, after several generations of unremitting efforts, and nearly 100 years of accumulation of various types of spinal surgical treatments and experience, has a strong human resources and a variety of spinal surgical treatments. The spine surgery department of the hospital has strong human resources and various kinds of advanced equipments necessary for diagnosis and treatment. In order to better benefit patients and promote the development of the discipline, in 2004, Xiangya Hospital singled out spine surgery from the former Department of Orthopaedics, led by Prof. Zhang Hongqi, and created a spine specialty: specializing in clinical diagnosis of spinal diseases, treatment and related research; to achieve the "specialization of specialties to see a special disease, specialists to treat a special disease"; through the extensive academic exchanges and a large number of talents from both domestic and foreign countries, the hospital has been able to provide a wide range of spine surgery services. Through extensive academic exchanges, extensive training of talents and the establishment of a high-quality nursing team, the Department of Spine Surgery of Xiangya Hospital has developed into a nationally renowned brand specialty with strong technical force, leading domestic and international scale, and integrating medical treatment, teaching and scientific research, and it is the vice-president of Orthopaedic Physicians Branch of China Medical Doctors' Association and the main committee member of the Professional Committee of Spine Surgery of Hunan Province. It is the vice-chairman of the Chinese Physicians Association Orthopaedic Physicians Branch, the affiliated unit of Hunan Provincial Committee of Spine Surgery, and one of the first national key clinical spine specialties.

The department also has four other authoritative experts who are widely recognized in the industry: Prof. Hu Jianzhong, chief physician, doctoral supervisor, vice president of Xiangya Hospital, and chairman of Hunan Provincial Committee of Spine Surgery; Prof. Deng Zansheng, doctoral supervisor; Prof. Wang Xiyang; and Prof. Long Wenrong, an expert who enjoys the State Council's special governmental subsidy.

In addition to completing tens of thousands of cases of spinal fracture, trauma, cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, spinal tumor, cervical and lumbar artificial disc replacement, spinal revision and other surgeries with high quality and successfully treating a large number of paralyzed patients and patients who are on the verge of being paralyzed; in the diagnosis and treatment of the other two specialties of the department, scoliosis and tuberculosis of the spine, the number of cases of surgeries and the therapeutic effect are also among the leading level in China and the international advanced level. In addition to the two other specialties of the department, scoliosis and spinal tuberculosis, the number of surgeries and the efficacy of the surgeries also ranked the leading level in China and synchronized with the international advanced level.

The department now operates two wards***90 beds, with an average annual outpatient volume of 60,000, and completes more than 1,700 difficult and complex spinal surgeries, including more than 100 orthopedic surgeries for scoliosis and more than 200 surgeries for spinal tuberculosis, which are among the top of spinal specialties in China.

The department now has 5 professors and chief physicians (including 4 doctoral supervisors), 4 associate professors and deputy chief physicians, 8 lecturers and attending physicians, 46 doctoral and master's degree students, and nearly 30 spinal surgery specialists are trained every year. 90% of the physicians in the department have obtained doctoral degrees, 80% of the personnel have gone abroad for further training and study, there are two experts enjoying the State Council special government subsidies, Furong Scholar 1.

From 2007 to now, the department has been awarded 7 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 10 key projects at provincial and ministerial levels, and more than 30 other projects and grants, with a cumulative total of nearly 30 million yuan of various types of grants, and 36 prizes at provincial and ministerial levels. He has published more than 300 papers in domestic and foreign journals and 60 SCI-recorded papers; edited 10 monographs, such as Surgery of Spinal Deformity and Surgery of Spinal Tuberculosis; and has been awarded 4 national invention patents and 2 utility model patents.

The department, as the chairman of the conference, has hosted international and national academic conferences and training courses for more than 10 times since 2007, and has trained more than 2,600 trainees of various types; experts from the department have been invited to participate in the top international spinal surgery conferences --- American Scoliosis Society (SRS), IMAST, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), North American Spine Society (NAS), and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (NAOS), and the American Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
