Orienteering sports include: foot orienteering, tool orienteering. Origin

On October 31, 1897, near the Norwegian capital of Oslo, the Dilfer Sports Club held the world's first public orienteering competition for the public, with only eight competitors. The competition was held on 1:3000 maps, and the total length of the race route was 10.5 kilometers, with three checkpoints set up. The winner took 1 hour, 41 minutes and 07 seconds, and the sport is considered the first milestone in the history of orienteering.

Orienteering itself was developed as a sport from the beginning of the 20th century in Northern Europe. By the 1930s, the sport had gained a foothold in Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and the first world orienteering competition was held in 1932. 1961 saw the establishment of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) in Copenhagen, Denmark. There are now 63 member countries. The IOF is the administrative entity of orienteering in the world, and is one of the general bodies of the international sports federations. Orienteering is also an internationally recognized Olympic sport.
