Why do Nepalese worship snakes and set up snake festivals?
The time is on the fifth day of the new month in April every year. When the festival comes, people with great reverence and worship paste colorful snake paintings on the main wall of the door and offer candy, cereal and milk to it, praying for peace and prosperity. In China, people often regard snakes as a symbol of malice and danger, while people in Nepal and other South Asian countries often regard snakes as gods. It is difficult to prove when Nepalese people began to worship the snake god. Anyway, this tradition is quite old. People generally think that snakes are the embodiment of this or that god, so when they see snakes crawling in the house, they should light some incense and pray for God's blessing. There is an ancient myth in Nepal. Gurka Nath once sat on a mat made of nine snakes, which kept Nepal 12 years from raining. This shows that people mainly regard snakes as rain gods, just like the Dragon King that China folks used to believe in. To this day, people still fear snakes. The most realistic reason may be that Nepal is a typical agricultural country, and farmers' harvest on the land mainly depends on the weather.
