Yuan Longping's Life Story
Yuan Longping, male, Han nationality, was born on September 7, 1930 in Beijing.
Graduated from Southwest Agricultural College in 1953.
Started research on hybrid rice in 1964.
In 1973, he realized the three lines.
In 1974, he bred the first strong hybrid rice combination, Nan You 2.
In 1975, hybrid rice seed production technology was successfully developed, thus laying the foundation for the large-scale popularization of hybrid rice.
In 1985, the strategic concept of hybrid rice breeding was put forward, pointing out the direction for the further development of hybrid rice.
In 1987, he was appointed as the responsible expert for the topic of two-line hybrid rice in the 863 Program.
In 1995, he successfully developed two lines of hybrid rice. In the same year, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In 1997, he put forward the technical route of super hybrid rice breeding.
In 2000, he realized the first phase of China's super rice breeding goal set by the Ministry of Agriculture.
In 2004, the second phase of super rice was realized one year ahead of schedule. It has won many domestic awards such as "National Prize for Special Inventions", "The First Highest Science and Technology Prize" and the United Nations "Science Prize", "Wolf Prize The company has also won 11 international awards, including the United Nations "Science Award", "Wolf Prize" and "World Food Prize".
Yuan Longping solved the three major problems in the research of three-line hybrid rice
Yuan Longping put forward the technical scheme of "distant hybridization between wild rice and cultivated rice", and finally found an effective way to cultivate male sterile lines, and in 1973, he realized the development of sterile lines, maintained lines and restored lines. In 1973, the "three lines" of sterile, maintained and restored lines were realized.
The second is the breeding of strong advantage of hybrid rice "Nan You 2" and a number of combinations, and in the production of large-scale application, the world's first successful use of rice hybrid advantage scientists.
Third is a breakthrough in seed production, the past research that the rice hybridization rate of only 2.4%, hybrid generation seed yield is extremely low, far from the production requirements; International Rice Research Institute in 1971 to start research, gave up in 1973, the reason is that at that time in the Institute, no one believes that can be resolved to solve the problem of seed production. And Yuan Longping led the group successfully solved this problem, seed production gradually increased, and now the high yield has reached more than 300 kilograms per mu.
