The Peony Pavilion is the masterpiece of Tang Xianzu, a playwright of the Ming Dynasty, together with The Tale of the Purple Hairpin, The Tale of Nanke, and The Tale of Handan, it is called "The Four Dreams of Linchuan."

Synopsis

The play depicts the story of Du Liniang, the daughter of a government official, who fell asleep in the garden one day, falling in love in a dream with a young scholar, and then died of depression when she woke up. After waking up, she spends the rest of the day searching for her dream and dies of depression. On her deathbed, Du Liniang seals her portrait and buries it next to a pavilion. Three years later, Liu Mengmei, a scholar from Lingnan, went to the capital to take the examination, and when the Jin Empire was in rebellion at the border, Du Liniang's father, Du Bao, was ordered by the emperor to go to the front line to defend the country. After that, Liu Mengmei found the portrait of Du Liniang, who turned into a ghost and asked Liu Mengmei to dig the grave and open the coffin, and Du Liniang came back to life. Afterwards, Liu Mengmei rushed to take the examination and got the top grade in high school, but due to the war and the delay in issuing the list, Liu Mengmei, who was still a scholar, was entrusted by Du Liniang to look for his father-in-law, Du Bao. Du Bao decides that this man is talking nonsense and immediately sends him to prison. After learning that Liu Mengmei for the new scholar, Du Bao will be released, but never recognize it as a son-in-law. Eventually to the Golden Palace above to be resolved, Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei two people finally married.
