How to develop students' national literacy

To cultivate the literacy of Chinese studies, we must first know what Chinese studies are. The current meaning of "national education" is relative to "Western learning" after "Western learning", so national education is indisputably "China's inherent cultural and academic". "Nowadays, the commonly mentioned national studies refer to all kinds of cultures and arts based on the pre-Qin classics and zhuzi studies and covering the later dynasties. Therefore, in a broad sense, ancient and modern Chinese culture and academics, including ancient Chinese history, thought, philosophy, geography, politics, economy, and even painting and calligraphy, music, econometrics, medicine, astrology, architecture and so on are the scope of the national science. The name of "National Studies" began at the end of the Qing Dynasty. At that time, European and American academics entered China, called "New Learning", "Western Learning", and so on, in contrast, people will be the Chinese inherent learning collectively referred to as "Old Learning", "Middle School" or "National Studies". National studies can also refer to the ancient Chinese doctrine. One of the representatives is the pre-Qin gurus, whose thoughts and doctrines have had a profound influence on Chinese traditional culture. They formed the ideology of military science, legalism, Mohism, Confucianism and Taoism, and so on. These ideas discussed how to govern the country from various aspects. They have had a profound influence on the rulers of all dynasties and have slowly formed the traditional cultural concepts of China.

At present, college students are basically out of a relatively unfamiliar state for the national education, for some of the theories of the sages and do not understand, which is a large part of the reason is that society does not pay enough attention to the national education, although the country has been working hard to implement in recent years, but the effect is limited. So what are the reasons? College students, as the future backbone of society should be how to improve their national education?

In my opinion, the most important thing is to correctly view the culture of Chinese studies, only after the correct cognition can we comprehensively promote Chinese studies within the college student group. Some people think that reading the classics of national education is to be retro and old-fashioned, is to read the Confucian classics, is to read the "Three Character Classic", "Disciple's Rules", these misunderstandings must be eliminated. So what are the classics of national education? National classics mainly include ethical classics: such as Three Character Classic, Disciple's Rules, Thousand Character Classic, Hundred Surnames, etc.; historical classics: Shangshu, Shiji, Ziji Tongjian, etc.; literary classics: University, Meanwhile, Tang poems, Song lyrics, Yuan operas, Ming and Qing novels, etc.; and philosophical classics: The Analects of Confucius and the Zhou Yi. The classics of national education are the immortal spirit, the guide to life, the inheritance of civilization, and the prescription for education. From the point of view of time, those before modern times are; from the point of view of content, the classics cannot be viewed with the eyes of modern people. For example, "Three Character Classic", "The mother of Mencius in the past, choosing a neighbor, the son does not learn, breaking the loom", and "Persuasion", "There is a golden house in the book, and there is a Yan Ruyu in the book". The classics have their dregs, but they can't be rejected wholesale. Some people say, "Three Kingdoms" is everywhere is the power to calculate, "Water Margin" is not moving is "killing people and goods". Dream of the Red Chamber, as Lu Xun commented: economists see it as I Ching; Taoists see it as obscenity; geniuses see it as stalking; revolutionaries see it as Manchu row; rumor-mongers see it as palace secrets. In spite of these problems, we are still advocating the reading of the "Four Great Books". The right thing to do is to take the good and remove the bad.

Treating Chinese studies, is it a pragmatic, utilitarian attitude, or the culture and spirit of "Chinese studies" penetrate into our lives? This is indeed something we need to discuss and think about. In the minds of the Chinese people, national education is a set of social norms and ethical and moral concepts such as "cultivating one's moral character, aligning one's family, ruling the country, and calming the world". Historians say that history lives and breathes only in the human world, and that we must constantly return to it in history to recall and realize the full experience of the past. Nationalism, as tradition, is a historical creation and existence, a cultural schema that we must practice, a spiritual wealth invented and accumulated by our ancestors over generations, and despite the fact that we sometimes have a temporal and psychological distance from this traditional culture, it is the foundation of our history and culture, its factors fill our blood, and it constitutes the objective environment in which we spiritually The objective environment in which our spirit grows. So, fundamentally, we are all actually its beneficiaries.

So what are the practical actions that can be taken to help improve college students' literacy in Chinese studies? First of all, from the school, can one add Chinese studies to the mandatory curriculum, raise the importance of the students, and choose teachers with strength and critical insight to teach this course. The whole outline of Chinese studies is explained, and then elective courses can be offered so that students can choose what they want to know more about according to their own preferences.

Secondly, Chinese studies clubs formed by students within schools are also a good way to give students enough exposure to Chinese studies, through group readings, cross-school exchanges, or inviting famous experts and scholars to give lectures at schools.

Finally, we ourselves should have a sense of mission as the messenger of inheriting Chinese traditional culture and nationalism, take the initiative to familiarize ourselves with it, learn it, and apply it in our lives and spread it to more people. Only in this way can we be regarded as really improving the quality of national education.
