What is ethics?

Morality is the habit of making good choices.

In China, morality is a combination of Tao and virtue. Tao is a good choice and virtue is a cultivation or habit. The combination of the two constitutes its definition as a good habit of choice, where habit is its kind and good choice is its distinction.

Morality belongs to the category of ethics. Its subject is human activity or practice, and its aim is the happiness of mankind. The law of morality is different from the law of nature or logic. It is not a 100% certain law. This is due to the uncertainty of the subject that corresponds to the moral law. Therefore, some people doubt the existence of moral laws.

The origin of morality is:

Practice or activity stems from desire, not reason. Reason can only distinguish between right and wrong, but does not cause any activity. In contrast, desire can cause activity, but cannot distinguish between right and wrong. Desire can be subordinate to reason or opposed to reason. Desires that are subordinate to reason lead to good choices, while desires that are opposed to reason lead to bad choices. Morality lies in such choices, so morality arises from the unity of desire and reason.

Moreover, desire is caused by feeling, which is divided into pleasure and pain. Pleasure comes from hobbies and pain from hatred. The love of a thing gives him happiness, so morality makes him happy. Therefore, morality and happiness are not necessarily both.
