The Origin of Dingzi Street in Chengdu

Among them, street names are named by direction, orientation and numerical ordinal number, which we call the word order category of orientation.

Using ordinal numbers and directions to name addresses and streets has a long history, and it is no exception at all times. Except for a few memorable ones, most of them are named after the ordinal number and location of the unblocked channel. There are about thirty orderly streets in Chengdu. Named after the place, there are about forty streets. Some streets, as the name implies, can be understood, such as Rudong, Xidingzi Street, Sandaoguai Street, Sifang Village, five generations under one roof, Balizhuang and so on. No need to explain. Here are only some street names that are easy to be confused and misunderstood. Mistakes should be corrected by readers.

Yishui Lane: In the east of the city, because it is close to the South River, in order to supply drinking water in the city, waterwheels and buckets used to enter and exit from it, so it was named. [Ming Dynasty] At the street corner, there was an iron sluice gate to defend Guancheng. With the same naming meaning as this lane, there are Ershui Lane and Shuixiang Lane.

First Ring Road: After 1949, in order to adapt to socialist construction and communicate urban and rural materials, the people's government gradually built a ring road around the suburbs of Chengdu, named the first ring road. Rows of new industrial zones have been built on both sides of the highway, and there are thriving and busy scenes everywhere. The second ring is similar to the third ring.

East-west alley: outside the back door of the city exhibition hall. The back door of the former Imperial Capital was named and then installed. Outside the gate, there are alleys inhabited by Hui people from south to north, which makes the East-West Lane and the Second Lane famous ... In the middle of Qing Dynasty, the alleys merged into streets, but only the East and West Alleys were retained.

Sanduo Lane: In the old society, many blessings, long life and many men are all congratulations. Out of the "Zhuangzi Heaven and Earth" article. Named after this, I wish residents peace, happiness and longevity. More than three miles with the same name.

Sangui Street: It is named after three osmanthus trees planted on the street.

Sansheng Street: In the old days, there were temples dedicated to Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. This street is also named after it. There is also Sanshenmiao Street, which is the seat of a temple dedicated to three clouds (Xiao Yun, Xiao Qiong and Bixiao) established by Taoism.

Sanyuan Street: From this, Sanyuanzheng Street, Hengjie Street, Hejie Street and Sanyuan Lane are derived. Named after the Taoist Sanyuan Palace in Qing Dynasty. Taoism calls the fifteenth day of the first month, the fifteenth day of July and the fifteenth day of October as festivals of the upper, middle and lower yuan. Also known as heaven, earth and water, they are the three elements and the ancestor of all things, so they are enshrined in a palace. The abandoned street name of the temple still exists.

Siwei Village: In the old days, propriety, righteousness, honesty and shame were the four basic principles of governing the country, also called "Siwei", which was a moral concept. He assisted Guan Zhong of Qi Huangong, one of the five tyrants in the Spring and Autumn Period.

Sandao Street and Sidao Street: Next to Changshun Street in Shaocheng, it used to be a Manchu soldier alley, and one, two, three, four ... streets in order. Now only the names of Mishima Street and Sidao Street are left.

Five Blessingg Street and Five Blessingg Village: In the old society, the ultimate fate of happiness, longevity, wealth, morality and governance (not to be killed by violence) was Five Blessingg, hence the name to express their wishes and good luck. The name of the street named "Five Generations under One Family" comes from a man named Zhang who lived under the same roof during the Qianlong period. Ganlong thought it was auspicious and wrote an inscription himself. Sichuan local officials went to congratulate him and presented a plaque of "centenarian". Therefore, this street is named.

Jiuru Village: In The Book of Songs Xiaoya Tianbao, there is a saying that "mountains are like hills, hills are like tombs, and rivers are like squares, so it is necessary to increase ... such as the constancy of the moon, the rising of the sun, the longevity of Nanshan, and the luxury of pine and cypress." There are nine words in the poem, meaning congratulations on birthday.

Jiu Si Lane: formerly known as Jiu Si Lane. "The Analects of Confucius Dai Ji" said: "A gentleman has Jiu Si, who is observant in thinking, attentive in listening, enthusiastic in thinking, respectful in looking, faithful in speaking, respectful in thinking, doubtful in asking questions, and hard in thinking." It refers to the moral character that should be possessed when dealing with people, and its name implies that a gentleman is modest and vigilant.

Jiulong Lane: Jiulongbi is the building where emperors originated, visited and stopped, and it is a symbol of Tianwei's imperial power. The Forbidden City in Beijing has nine dragon walls. There is also a saying in Buddhist scriptures that the dragon gave birth to nine sons and ruled the world's water system. A wall of Kowloon set is a sign that the emperor is the "real dragon son of heaven". Some people think that it is not far from the imperial city, and the Nine Dragon Wall was probably built that year. Chengdu has never been the place where the central emperor ascended the throne, nor has it become the capital of the royal family, so the Nine Dragons Wall has never been built. This street is not in the imperial city, and its name has nothing to do with the emperor's royal family. The imperial city lived in [Ming Dynasty] and had princes, but it was limited by feudal etiquette and dared not build a dragon wall. During the Kangxi period of Qing Dynasty (1662 ~ 1722), when Chengdu rebuilt its street name, it was said that dragons lurked under the rivers of Jinhe and Yu He, and the dragons guarding the Yu He River were counted as Laojiu in Kowloon, so the small street along the Yu He River was named Jiulong Lane. On the other hand, in this street, Jiubi Village was once named after Jiubi.

11th Street: After War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the population of Chengdu surged and Nancheng expanded. The 11th Street, 14th Street, 15th Street and 17th Street are named according to ordinal number, and lanes with corresponding names are derived.

Dongchenggen Street: Open the map of Chengdu and you will see a strange phenomenon: there will be Dongchenggen Street in the west, Yuecheng Street in the city and Shuncheng Street in the east and west. Thirdly, there are Dongcheng Guai Street and Dongyuan Street. In the ancient city, there are streets named after the west in the east side, and some streets in the north and south sides are also called north and south. This can only be made clear in connection with the scale of Chengdu city 80 or 90 years ago. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were high walls around Chengdu, which were demolished one after another. At present, there is only a section of Ming city left in the new South Gate as a key cultural relic, but it can be seen from the map that its scale and outline are generally square, and it is said that it runs through the city for nine miles and three miles. When naming the street near the city wall, naturally someone will come into contact with the word city. There is an imperial city with an area of about 3 ~ 4 square miles, with a palace inside and a wall outside. Along the city wall, there are street names such as Shuncheng Street and Yuecheng Street. In the southwest corner of Chengdu, there is also a small town where Manchu officials and soldiers live. Along the wall of Shaocheng, there are street names such as Dongcheng Gen Street. Along the Imperial City and Shaocheng, there are Jinhe River, Yu He River and the drainage ditch in the city, so there are East and West Xihuamen Street, East and West Yu He Street, Jinhe Street, East and West Longwei Lane, East and West Goutou Lane, Xicheng Corner Street and Xicheng Lane. Because Chengdu is a city with many city walls, there are many streets named after the city.

East and north Tongshun Street: near the original city wall in the north of the city. In the old days, outside the city wall was an open space, and it was forbidden to build roof truss houses. Outside the moat, houses facing the street are built outside the river. The city wall is also an open space, which is convenient for assembling soldiers, storing weapons, ammunition and food, and setting up camp pots and stoves when guarding the city defense. After the Revolution of 1911, the area near the inner city wall was gradually occupied by citizens and traffic was blocked. After the house was demolished, it was named Tongshun Street.

Qinglong Street: According to ancient myths and legends, immortals live on the stars in the sky. In the eastern part of the northern hemisphere, there are seven stars, namely, Arctium lappa, Kangsu, Pleiades, Su Fang, Antares, Tarsus and Jisu, which form the dragon-shaped God of the East. In ancient times, blue, red, yellow, white and black were called positive colors, representing five directions: east, south, west, north and middle. So the East is a dragon, called Qinglong. The descendants of Daodu called Qinglong, Baihu, Suzaku (Hong Niao) and Xuanwu (black turtle or tortoise and snake) the gods of the four directions. "Book of Rites Qu Lishang" "Before the trip, Suzaku followed Xuanwu, left Qinglong and right White Tiger". Therefore, the left direction is generally coded by Qinglong. According to legend, Wang Yan, the former emperor of Shu, built a pavilion in the northwest corner of Chengdu in the first year of Gande (9 19) and lived in it. Because he is the emperor, the outside of his residence can be named after the four gods, so he took the names of Qinglong and Baihu. Since then, this street has suffered many wars, and the name of White Lake Street seems unlucky. Therefore, it was not restored when the city was built after the Song Dynasty, and only Qinglong Street was retained. Another way of saying it is: In the past, near Mo Chi (now No.13 Middle School), someone saw Qinglong falling from the sky and turning it into a beautiful woman in Mo Chi, and the Dragon Lady Temple was established to commemorate this event. Later, this street was named Longnvci Street and changed to Qinglong Street.

Donghua Street: Located in Donghuamen, Imperial City. The names of the palace gates are all named according to certain etiquette. The sunrise in the east is China, so it is named Donghuamen, and the street is named after the door.

Qianxiang Street: Formerly known as Qiang Jian Street, it was adjacent to Suqian Street, so it was the Chengdu county government and its prison in [Ming and Qing Dynasties]. People who live here think street names are unlucky and homophonic, so they can leave their names. Auspicious means auspicious, auspicious. Thousands refer to the majority. Similarly, there is Wanfu Street, which means good luck.
