According to the creative practice of figure painting, Sheikh, a painter and theorist in the Southern Dynasties, summed up the social function of painting and six criteria for evaluating painting, which are called "six methods". Although it was a requirement for characters and aesthetics at that time, it was later considered as a requirement for Chinese painting.
These six methods are "vivid charm, brushwork in bone, pictographic object, coloring and class, business position, transfer and modeling."

Modern Qian Zhongshu re-punctuated: "Who is the Six Laws? First, the charm is vivid; Second, the bone method, using a pen is also; Third, the object should be pictographic; Fourth, with the class, the color is also; 5. Operation and location; Sixth, transfer, dictation. " (Pipeline Taper Compilation Volume IV)
These six methods are as follows:
① "Vivid charm" or "Vivid charm, yes" means that the image depicted in the work or the whole work has vivid charm and vitality. At first, it was used to measure the image of characters in painting, and later it was extended to other works with themes, even some painting form factors.
(2) "Writing with the pen as the bone method" or "Writing with the pen as the bone method is also right", in which "bone" is a figurative concept, which refers to the straightforwardness and decisiveness of people's inner character and the identity temperament embodied in the bones of the characters painted. Sheikh's "bone method" also includes the beauty of bone strength and strength expressed by pen, which is an aesthetic principle determined by the unique materials and tools of traditional painting and national style.
(3) "should be pictographic" or "should be pictographic" means that the painter's description should be similar to the reflected object. Putting it behind the verve bone method shows that the Northern and Southern Dynasties attached great importance to the authenticity of the depicted objects, and at the same time profoundly grasped the relationship between the external expression and the internal expression of art, and its position was very appropriate.
(4) "Color by class" or "Color by class is true" refers to color, which can be interpreted as the color is similar to the painted object.
⑤ "business place" or "business place also". The original intention of management is to build, build, locate or refer to the position or arrangement of objects. Because of different sentences, "position" is either a noun or a verb. In short, it means composition and conception.
⑥ "Copy imitation" or "Copy imitation is also true" refers to copying works. Pass, transfer, or explain, impart, distribute, pass, and the model is imitation. The transfer of cloth in painting depends on writing. The role of modeling is to learn basic skills and can be used as a means to spread works. Because it is different from creation, Sheikh put it at the end of the six laws.
