How Americans celebrate birthdays
Americans are actually very simple in their social relationships; they don't invite relatives or friends for their children's birthdays, but they do make sure to invite their children's classmates. Generally speaking, if there are more than a dozen children in a class, then the parents of these children basically have to attend a birthday party once a month.
Parents usually don't hold birthday parties for their children at home, but rather charter two hours in parks, children's gyms, museums, and so on, renting their venues. This way the kids have both someone to lead them and a special place to play, and more importantly the parents themselves won't be too tired as these places will have games, food and birthday cakes ready. But the parents of the children usually need to prepare simple gifts to distribute to the children who come to the Party.
