Introduction to Shoushan Stone Carving

Shoushan stone carving, one of the Han folk carving art. Shoushan stone carving techniques are rich and varied, exquisite and familiar, but also in the development process of the wide range, a blend of Chinese painting and various folk crafts carving techniques and artistic essence. The techniques mainly include round carving, seal button carving, thin carving, hollow carving, shallow relief carving, high relief carving, inlay carving, chain carving, seal carving and micro-carving. Shoushan stone carvings have a wide range of subjects, including figures, animals, landscapes, flowers and birds. Shoushan stone carvings in Fuzhou, together with Fuzhou's lacquer ware and cork paintings, are known as the "Three Greats of Banyan City". Shoushan stone carving is a traditional folk carving art, using Shoushan stone produced in the northern mountainous area of Fuzhou as the material, and making small carvings for people to enjoy through special techniques. Shoushan stone carving is very important according to the stone modeling, so there is a phase of nine workers said that its skills are mainly circulated in Jinan District, Fuzhou City, Gushan, Yuefeng Town, Elephant Garden, Wang Zhuang Street and Shoushan Township. 2006 May 20, Shoushan stone carving by the State Council approved the inclusion of the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
