What was the architectural style of Western Europe in the early Middle Ages?
Western European architecture in the early Middle Ages was after the fall of Rome. There were no other great buildings in Europe except Byzantine territory, and these buildings did not appear one after another until the appearance of Lorraine Dynasty. Only then gradually formed the western European architecture.
First of all, the important origin of western European architecture comes from Carolingian dynasty, and its architecture is basilica style, and most of them are distributed with western-style architecture.
The main buildings in the west are corbis Abbey and saint-denis Church on the outskirts of Paris, both masterpieces of Caroline Dynasty.
In the early Middle Ages, the most notable building in Western Europe was the entrance gatehouse of Lorsch Monastery. He was built around 800 AD, and his design was inspired by the layout of the Arc de Triomphe in ancient Rome. His door is decorated with slotted pilaster and classical stigma, which is a very classic design.
After ruling 100 years, Caroline dynasty was divided into three parts in the turmoil and gradually formed three powerful kingdoms. They are the predecessors of Germany, France and Italy.
At the Otto ceremony in 962 AD, Otonis was the Otto dynasty known as the Holy Roman Empire. Otto dynasty inherited Caroline dynasty and hired many foreign artists to contribute to the development of the country. But this is not a simple continuation of the Carolingian Renaissance, but a real development.
The close relationship between Otto dynasty architecture and Caroline dynasty architecture has become the last stage of western European architecture development. Their buildings are almost all basilica-style structures, and the upper part of the central lobby is a flat roof made of wood.
However, under the rule of Otto Dynasty and Carolingian Dynasty, they didn't adopt the Romanesque vocabulary of vault structure architecture, and there was almost no innovation. They just perfected and continuously expanded the architectural form of Carolingian, making its structure more regular and its layout more perfect and systematic.
