The Poem of Wudao Fanaticism by Zhao Jingfu

The year before last, I coincidentally read an interview with Zhao Daoxin, which made a lot of sense, so I organized it a bit and passed it on to Douban, titled Zhao Daoxin's Criticism of the Chinese Martial Arts.

In the interview, Zhao Daoxin sharply criticized China's arrogant traditional martial arts:

Two months ago, I read Hong Kong writer Qiao Jingfu's Poems of the Wudao Maniacs, Volumes 1-10. The Wudang sect in the book is a change from the sectarian malpractice described by Zhao Daoxin.

First of all, I recommend this martial arts novel, unlike Jin Yong Gu Long, because the author himself is a martial arts practitioner, so every action in the book martial arts have a more accurate description of the text, you can imagine in your mind a frame by frame.

In Poetry of Martial Madness, a true martial arts practitioner must be pursuing the highest state of martial arts, almost obsessive. It can be described as "higher, faster, stronger".

At that time, there were nine schools in the martial arts world, also known as the "Six Mountains and Three Sects":

The Wudang School, in the fight to eliminate the evil cult, obtained the secrets of martial arts and elixirs, and the head of the school was determined to reform the school, and the whole school returned to secularism, and reformed and integrated the martial arts of the Wudang School. The organizational structure of the Wudang Sect also underwent a radical change, all disciples could be promoted through challenges, and the Vice Sect Master could challenge for the position of the Sect Master once a year. In the meantime, the Wudang Sect's internal organization has been infused with a competitive mechanism.

At the same time, the Wudang Sect declared war on all the sects in the whole martial arts world, either to be subordinate to Wudang and become a vassal, or to be exterminated. Regardless of whether they are exterminated or reincorporated, they search for the secret books of each school, observe the martial arts techniques of each school, and then integrate and improve them. The Wudang Sect is considered to be the public enemy of the Wudang Sect. But in fact, the purpose of the Wudang school is very simple, is to break the bad habits of the sects, to take the essence of the rough, to achieve the strongest of the martial arts.

What's also interesting about The Poetry of Wudao is that the author tells us about the principles of kung fu in the world of martial arts, like a lecture. Martial arts is different from metaphysical cultivation, it is still grounded, and flying around is a superpower, not a martial art. Let's take a look at how Qiao Jingfu explains kung fu in the world of martial arts:

Traditional martial arts practice is divided into three levels, namely "qi," "yi," and "shen".

There are also three directions and scopes of exercise for martial artists, "Form", "Kung Fu", and "Method".

Mindfulness is divided into two categories:
