Traditional village refers to a village that was formed earlier, is rich in cultural and natural resources, has certain historical, cultural, scientific, artistic, economic and social values, and should be protected.

On September 20 12, it was decided at the first meeting of the expert committee on the protection and development of traditional villages that the customary name "ancient village" was changed to "traditional village" to highlight its civilized value and inheritance significance.

On 20 12, 12 and 19, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance issued announcements to publicize the list of traditional villages in China. Among them, Guizhou Province has the largest number of 90, while Yunnan Province and Shaanxi Province have 62 and 49 respectively, ranking second and third.
