January 1: New Year's Day

National holiday day. By convention, if the holiday falls on a weekend, the day is made up on Monday.

February 14: Valentine's Day

Holiday for lovers. No national holiday.

March 1: St. David's Day

St. David is the patron saint of Wales. Celebrated with traditional customs, no national holiday.

March 17: St. Patrick's Day

Patron saint of Ireland. Celebrated with traditional Irish customs. No national holiday.

April 1: April Fool's Day

Usually harmless jokes between friends or coworkers, but only before 12 noon.

April 2: Mother's Day

Send cards, flowers or gifts to thank your mother.

April 13: Friday Day

A national holiday day. A Christian religious holiday.

April 15-16: (Jesus) Easter

Easter eggs made of chocolate are given to children as gifts.

April 23: St. George's Day

Patron saint of England. Traditional customs celebrated. No national holiday.

May 7: May Public Holiday

One day off. Religious holiday.

May 28: May Public Holiday

One day off. Religious holiday.

June 17: Father's Day

Send cards, flowers or gifts to thank your father.

August 27: August Public Holiday

One day off. Religious holiday.

October 31: Ghost Day

Traditionally celebrated with pumpkin lights, masquerade parties or parades. Children knock on neighbors' doors for change or candy. No holiday.

November 5: Gefke Night (commonly known as Firewood Night)

Celebrates the arrest and execution of Gefke, who tried to burn down the Capitol building. Traditionally celebrated by burning firewood and setting off fireworks. No holidays.

November 11: Remembrance Day

Each year, Nov. 11 is observed at 11 a.m. in honor of the Unknown Martyrs who died in World Wars I and II. Almost all stores sell plastic or paper poppy memorials around this time. Most towns and cities hold a small ceremony in front of the Martyrs' Memorial Tower. Members of the Royal Family attending in London or, if overseas, an immediate two-minute silence is observed. There are no national holidays.

November 30: St. Andrew's Day

Scotland's patron saint. Traditional customary celebration, no national holiday.

December 24-26: Christmas Day

The national holiday is two days from Christmas Day, but most people are off until after New Year's Day. Generally speaking, it is not a good idea to arrange business trips to the UK from late December until early January.
