Where did the Minnan language originate? Which culture does it belong to?
What kind of language is Minnan? Some people say it's "Fulao", others say it's "Raccoon Fang". 1500 years ago, or even earlier, the Han Chinese people in the Yellow River and Luoshui area, in order to escape the war, moved to Guangzhou, Henan Province, and the culture of the Han Chinese people was brought to this area by their children and grandchildren, and then moved to southern Fujian Province. Thereafter, they moved to southern Fujian and finally across the strait to Taiwan.
The language of Minnan and Taiwan that carries on this culture is what we now call "Minnan dialect". In the long history of our traditional culture, the significance of Minnan dialect lies in the fact that our ancestors avoided the linguistic reforms caused by the fusion of the ethnic groups of the Central Plains during the great migration, and completely preserved the ancient Han sound of the two Han dynasties, which is the standard sound of the Central Plains.
More noteworthy is that the language used to translate the Buddhist scriptures at that time was the Chinese language of the early Tang Dynasty "Cheyun" system, and the "Heluo Wenyin" used in Southern Fujian Province was the "mother tongue" of the Tang Dynasty Chinese language. The "Hieroglyphics" used in Minnan were the "mother tongue" of Tang Dynasty Chinese. Later, the sutras were transmitted to Japan by Japanese students with katakana phonetic notation and are not used to this day. Today, when Japanese people recite sutras and sing poems, they are almost the same in pronunciation as Minnan people recite sutras and sing poems in Minnan Chinese, which is enough to explain why many sutras cannot be understood by using Putonghua for phonetic translation or transliteration, but can be understood well by using Minnanese; this is also the reason why many masters have often lamented the loss of Chinese pronunciation in Minnanese. The loss of the hanyu in Minnanhua is a great loss to those who recite the sutras.
Proudly, the Minnan dialect has become one of the 60 major languages of the earth, and it was recorded on the gold-plated record of the U.S. spacecraft "Releaser" launched in 1997 to search for its soulmate in the vast and boundless starry sky.
Taking Minnanhua as a frame of reference for Chinese.
Professor Li Rulong of Xiamen University's School of Humanities, an expert in language studies, said that Minnan dialect contains many components of ancient Chinese, be it phonetics, vocabulary or grammar. In this regard, relevant experts have made a fuller comparison. To learn ancient Chinese, it is more advantageous to master the accent of Fujian dialect, especially Minnan dialect, than to know the dialects of other regions. For example, "鼎", which usually refers to an iron pot in ancient Chinese, is pronounced in the same way in Minnan dialect as in ancient Chinese, and the meaning of the word is the same. But it's not as easy for people from other places to understand as it is for people from southern Fujian.
Professor Li said the modern industrial Chinese language, which evolved and evolved from the ancient Chinese language, is also y related to Minnanese, and if the characteristics of Minnanese can be grasped and compared with modern Chinese, it can speed up the understanding and mastery of the modern Chinese language. In the early days of language teaching, it was usual to start with orthography and then understand the meaning of words and phrases from the perspective of linking Mandarin to dialect. Now this method is being faded or even abandoned. Many people think that dialects interfere with the learning of Chinese, which is actually a misconception. For example, if you don't understand or speak Southern Min dialects, but your Mandarin may not be standardized either. An issue of concern is that in the current language teaching in primary and secondary schools, most teachers are good at teaching the contrast between dialects and Chinese, rejecting the function and role of dialects in assisting teaching. Prof. Li said that the splendid Chinese culture is expressed in Chinese, but it also contains excellent regional cultural characteristics expressed in different dialects. He believes that mastering Minnan dialect not only provides a good frame of reference for Chinese language learning, but more importantly helps to understand and comprehend Minnan culture.
