How does Buddhism view Feng Shui?

According to the research of modern scholars, the earliest definition of Feng Shui in history was Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty. In his famous book "The Book of Burial", he said: "The person who is buried takes advantage of the vitality, and the vitality takes advantage of the wind." If it disperses, the boundary water will stop. The ancients gathered it to prevent it from spreading, and moved it to stop it. Therefore, it is called Feng Shui. The method of Feng Shui is to get the water first, and to hide the wind second. "It can also be seen that Feng Shui is the best. The art of phase-division focuses on the selection and treatment of residences and burial environments in order to achieve the purpose of seeking good fortune and avoiding misfortune.

There is a saying in "Huangdi's House Sutra": "The house takes the shape as the body, the spring water as the blood, the land as the skin, the vegetation as the hair, the house as the clothes, and the door as the crown. . If this is the case, it is an elegant and auspicious thing.” However, this content is just borrowed from the theory of Feng Shui, which means that if the human body is properly regulated, it will naturally be healthy. This does not mean that adjusting the residence and the place where ancestors are buried can ensure peace.

The theory of Feng Shui was not originally related to Buddhism. However, after Buddhism was introduced to China, it was influenced by the folk beliefs at that time, so that many Buddhists were also willing to study Feng Shui. So, does Buddhism agree with Feng Shui, which states that just adjusting your residence and the place where your ancestors are buried can achieve the effects of getting rich, getting promoted, and maintaining peace?

First of all, in Buddhist scriptures, Sakyamuni Buddha clearly stipulates that Buddhist disciples cannot engage in Feng Shui, divination and other superstitious activities. The Buddha said in "The Sutra of Ananda Asking the Buddha about Good and Bad Things": "If a sick person is suspicious and unbelieving, he will call a wizard to ask for divination and interpretation, and worship evil gods in the temple. Gods are far away and cannot be protected; evil spirits are advancing day by day, and evil spirits are Tuen Mun, let it decline, and the direction is not harmonious. "It is also said: "As a disciple of the Buddha, you are not allowed to ask for divination, ask evil spirits, perform incantations, wear strange things, worship in temples, and interpret music, and you are not allowed to choose a good day or a good time." "The Sutra of Divining Good and Evil Karma Retributions" also says: "You should not give up such a method and return to follow the world's divination, all kinds of fortune-telling and other things, and be greedy for it. If you practice it, you will seriously hinder the saints. "Obviously, the Buddha was firmly opposed to Feng Shui, divination and other activities, and believed that if you are willing to engage in such superstitious activities, it will hinder the practice of the path to liberation, and you will also feel unlucky. Retribution in the hereafter.

Not only are Buddhists unable to believe in Feng Shui, but they are also prohibited from engaging in this industry. If a Buddhist practitioner engages in fortune-telling, feng shui, or other things that tell people good or bad luck, it is called evil destiny in Buddhism. In Volume 3 of the Indian Nagarjuna Bodhisattva's "Great Wisdom", it is said: "Sariputra said: There are monks who combine medicine, plant grains, plant trees and other impure people to survive, and they eat by mouth. There are monks who look at the stars, The sun, moon, wind, rain, thunder and lightning, and thunderbolts are not the only way to survive. This is called eating food by mouth. There are monks who are charming and powerful, and they are able to communicate in all directions. Those who are not clean and live by eating food are called eating food. All kinds of incantations, fortune-telling and other impurities are called four-dimensional food."

And in Volume 19 of "Great Wisdom", the dragon is mentioned. Tree Bodhisattva gave a definition of the five kinds of evil destiny: "Ask: What are the five kinds of evil destiny? The answer is: First, if one does it for the sake of profit and support, it will falsely appear strange and strange; second, if it is done for the sake of profit and support, it will naturally appear strange. Talking about merits and virtues; third, for the sake of benefit and support, predicting good and bad luck, and telling others about it; fourth, for the sake of benefit and support, making a loud and powerful voice, which makes people awe; fifth, for the sake of benefit and support, saying the offerings obtained, in order to move them People's hearts. It is an evil destiny to live due to evil causes."

Although Buddhist scriptures and Bodhisattva's treatises criticize fortune telling and prohibit Buddhist disciples from engaging in such activities, Buddhists do not believe it. Influenced by Taoism and folk beliefs, a large number of people are still keen on it. This can also be seen from the writings of Master Lianchi, the founder of Pure Land Sect in the Ming Dynasty. Master Lianchi said in "Zhi Dao Lu": "People in the world believe in Feng Shui, especially in fate. Therefore, fate is determined at the beginning of life, while Feng Shui can be dealt with now. Therefore, we believe in it and seek it to the end. Diligent, there are few people who can break this confusion. So I went to tell them: I am in a humble family, I am unable to find a place, or I am a high-tech person, I have a hundred plans to build a tomb, my descendants are poor, and I am in a state of embarrassment. ? This principle is very clear, but the confusion is still unclear, saying: This must be caused by Feng Shui for a long time.

He also went to tell him: Emperor Gao of the Han Dynasty, Shen Yao of the Tang Dynasty, and Yi Zu of the Song Dynasty were ancestors and fathers. , Who chooses the best and most rare place in the world, and his descendants will be emperors for generations? This reason is very clear, but the confusion is still unclear, saying: This is why his ancestors had no desire to be emperors, but they accidentally obtained the land of emperors. Ye. He went back and said: Astronomy is easy to verify, but geography is difficult to understand. Even if the difference is just a few centimeters, the whole country can't tell where the veins come from and where the acupoints come from. If you rely on the words of a teacher, do you really believe it?

And if it is true, it may be many years ago, and there will be no good or bad luck in the morning, so how can you test the success or failure of what you say? ? This principle is very clear, but the confusion is still unclear. He said: This teacher was recommended by a certain man, and his skills were excellent. That's it. Again, A's burial was wrong, B's change was wrong, and B's change was wrong. Then there were those who couldn't find the land and exposed their relatives over time. They said: This is not good for their growth. Zhong, this is not a good season. They are all trying to bribe their masters, and those who are at odds with each other have land adjacent to other houses, and Zhang Ming is on the left, and Li Ming is on the right, either in front or behind. I, if you offend me, you will be punished. Even if you are a wise and virtuous person, you can't get out of it. Women and boys don't know it. I don't know why it is so. Or maybe it's because there is no such thing as wind and fruit?
