Variations

Variations refer to music whose theme and a series of changes are created repeatedly in accordance with a unified artistic conception. The word "variation" comes from Latin variation, which means change and the evolution of the theme. From ancient fixed bass variation to modern decorative variation and free variation, the variation techniques used are different.

The theme of the first part is the foundation of the whole musical image, and the other parts are the further development of this musical image. Widely used in folk music and rap music. For example, the flute "Welcome", the pipa "Sunset Flute and Drum" and the folk instrumental ensemble "Sixteen Boards" all belong to this musical structure.

Variations are also often used to compose independent instrumental music or sonatas, symphonies and other large-scale music, and the number of variations is not limited, ranging from four or five to dozens. For example, Beethoven's Variations on 32 in C Minor is very famous.

Variational form is one of the oldest forms in the world, and every repeated segmented song and its instrumental accompaniment can be said to be the embryonic form of variation. Through the development and perfection of composers of different times and schools, various variations have been created, and several main variations, such as fixed bass variations, decorative variations and free variations, have been formed. These variations are based on the elements of variations-theme melody, harmony, texture and structure (sometimes repetitive).
