What are the festival customs of the Dragon Boat Festival Draw a picture
The festive customs of the Dragon Boat Festival include racing dragon boats, eating zongzi, hanging mugwort and wearing five-color thread.
1. Dragon Boat Racing
Dragon Boat Racing is one of the most characteristic activities of the Dragon Boat Festival. People organize teams to row dragon boats and race in rivers and lakes. Dragon boats are usually long canoes with a dragon head sculpture on the bow, decorated with colorful ribbons. The team members wear uniform costumes and paddle in unison according to the rhythm in order to compete for the victory of the race. The event originated from a story commemorating Qu Yuan's throwing himself into the river, and also signifies praying for peace and preventing floods.
2. Eating Zongzi
Zongzi is an essential traditional food for the Dragon Boat Festival. Zongzi is usually wrapped in glutinous rice in Ruo leaves or zongzi leaves, filled with various fillings, such as meat, bean paste, red dates and so on. The custom of eating zongzi is related to honoring Qu Yuan. Legend has it that after Qu Yuan threw himself into the river, people in order to avoid the fish and shrimp to eat Qu Yuan's body, have thrown food into the river to stop the fish and shrimp to eat, so the custom of eating zongzi was formed.
3. Hanging mugwort
The Dragon Boat Festival also has the custom of hanging mugwort. People would hang the moxa bags with moxa leaves at the door or on the beams and pillars indoors. Mugwort has the function of driving away evil spirits and poisons in Chinese medicine, and it is believed that hanging mugwort can drive away plague and evil spirits and protect the health of the body. In addition, mugwort can also repel mosquitoes, cold and coolness, and has certain mosquito repellent and heat repellent effects.
4. Wearing five-color thread
Wearing five-color thread is a customary activity of the Dragon Boat Festival. People choose five colors of silk thread (red, yellow, blue, white and black) and weave them into a thin rope, which is then passed through the eye of a needle and passed through the thigh or wrist of the body, meaning to drive away ghosts and evil spirits and to get rid of illnesses and prolong life. The five-colored threads represent the five elements and are believed to ward off evil spirits and expel diseases. Especially for children and newborns, threading the five-colored threads is a ritual to protect their health.
5. Other Festival Customs
Besides the main festival customs mentioned above, there are also some other traditional activities in the Dragon Boat Festival, such as dancing dragon lanterns, inserting mugwort, stepping on mugwort and swimming. All of these activities reflect people's quest to drive away evil spirits and illnesses, to dispel epidemics and for health care, as well as to celebrate this traditionally important festival.
These Dragon Boat Festival festive customs are colorful, they not only enrich the connotation of the festival, but also promote the traditional culture of the Chinese nation.
