Characteristics of Oroqen Folk Houses

1. The traditional houses of Oroqen nationality are inclined columns. "Xie Renzhu" is the Oroqen language, which means "wooden house". It is a simple conical house made of twenty or thirty wooden poles with a length of five or six meters and animal skin or birch bark. Use birch bark or reeds in summer and bark as mulch in winter. It takes sixty or seventy barks to build an "inclined column". Hang wicker curtain on the door in summer and deer skin or deer skin curtain in winter.

The structure of the inclined column is very simple: firstly, several wooden poles with branches at the top can be meshed with each other to form a conical frame with an inclination of about 60 degrees, and then other wooden poles are evenly placed between these main frames to form an umbrella-shaped skeleton. Covered with deerskin or birch bark, an "inclined column" is built, which can protect against rain in summer and cold in winter. There should be a gap at the top of the inclined column, so that it can ventilate and smoke when making a fire, and it can light up. There is also a door to the south or southeast, which can let people in and out.

3. The covering on the inclined column should change according to the season. In winter, the climate is cold, so it is often covered with bark. A diagonal column needs about fifty or sixty skins. When the weather gets warmer in spring, you can change birch bark. When using birch bark, peel off the hard layer outside and cook the soft layer inside in a pot to make it softer and tougher. Then sew a small piece of birch bark into several large pieces with horse hair or deer tendon thread. When covering, lay one layer at a time from bottom to top and fix it on the wooden pole with the belt nailed to the corner. In winter, inclined columns are mostly built in the leeward and sunny places of hillsides, and in summer, they are mostly built in places with high terrain and cool ventilation.
