The inheritance of Zen Buddhism is based on Buddhism. There is an ancestral temple in the northwest of Shaolin Temple, which was built in the Song Dynasty. Zhenjue Temple, also known as Dongshan Temple, is located on the Mao Feng in Erdan, northeast of Huangmei, Hubei. Daoxin, the fourth ancestor of Zen Buddhism, and Hongren, the fifth ancestor, once lived here.
Nanhua Temple, located 60 miles south of Shaoguan, Guangdong Province, was originally named Baolin Temple. Huineng, the sixth ancestor of Zen Buddhism, practiced Buddhism here. There is a six-ancestor pagoda in the temple, which is the hall of six ancestors.
