March of the Volunteer Army
Words by Tian Han
Tunes by Nie Er
Rise up! People who don't want to be slaves!
Build our flesh and blood into our new Great Wall!
The Chinese nation has reached the most dangerous time.
Everyone was forced to let out a final roar.
Rise up! Arise! Get up!
We are all of one mind.
Advancing against enemy fire!
Forward, under enemy fire!
Forward! Forward, forward!
Expanded:
"March of the Volunteer Army", is the theme song of the 1935 film Children of the Wind and Cloud, and the national anthem of the People's Republic of China*** and the State of China.
In 1935, the song was written by Tian Han and composed by Nie Er. In fact, Nie Er only wrote the main melody score with a simple accompaniment, which was orchestrated by He Luting, who asked the orchestra conductor of the Shanghai Bai Dai Records Company, the Russian-Jewish composer Aaron Avshalomov, to orchestrate it.
The song soon became the theme song for the Chinese movie "Sons and Daughters of the Wind and Cloud" and was covered by the black American singer Paul Robeson as a show of solidarity with the Chinese people in their war against Japan.
At present, most of the various bands that play the song and accompany the chorus follow the orchestral score written by Li Huanzhi for the song and finalized in 1953. The song was already popular during the Anti-Japanese War and was designated as the anthem of the 200th Division of the Fifth Army of the National Revolutionary Army of the Republic of China (ROC), of which General Dai Anlan was the division commander.
On September 27, 1949, the First Plenary Session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) resolved that before the national anthem of the People's Republic of China (PRC) was formally formulated, the March of the Volunteer Army would be used as the national anthem.3716 On October 1, the PRC was founded.
After the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, Tian Han, the lyricist of the national anthem, was criticized, and "The East is Red" replaced "March of the Volunteers" as the unofficial national anthem for a time. Subsequently, the March of the Volunteers continued to exist in a version without lyrics. By 1978, the March of the Volunteers, which had been collectively lyricized during the Cultural Revolution, was officially adopted as the national anthem of the People's Republic of China.
In 1982, the National People's Congress (NPC) passed a resolution to revoke the new 1978 lyrics and restore the March of the Volunteers, with lyrics by Tian Han and music by Nie Er, as the national anthem of the People's Republic of China (PRC).
The amendment to the Constitution adopted on March 14, 2004, stipulated that the national anthem of the People's Republic of China (PRC) would be the March of the Volunteers.
