What are the main characteristics of a community?
(1) A community is a social entity. That is, it includes not only a certain quantity and quality of population, but also the social groups and social organizations constituted by these people; not only people's economic life, but also political and cultural life; not only economic relations, but also other social relations, such as blood and geography; not only a certain geographical area, but also the means of production and means of subsistence on which people rely to carry out social activities. In short, it includes the most basic content of the social organism, is the epitome of macro-society. (2) The community has multiple functions. Unlike social organizations with a single goal and function, the function of the community is multifaceted. In the case of China's urban and rural grass-roots communities, the first is an economic function, mainly manifested in the community-based institutions mostly play a role in organizing, carrying out and managing production and business activities, or providing prenatal, mid-natal and post-natal services and so on. Secondly, they have a political function, which is mainly manifested in the fact that most grass-roots communities play a role in implementing the guidelines and policies of the Party and the Government, safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the residents, establishing and developing various types of political organizations, and promoting grass-roots democracy and the construction of the legal system, among other things. Thirdly, they have a cultural function, which is mainly manifested in the fact that grass-roots communities are responsible for developing education, organizing cultural and recreational activities and sports, and organizing and carrying out mass spiritual civilization-building activities. Fourthly, it has the function of social management and social integration, which is mainly manifested in the fact that grass-roots communities are responsible for the maintenance of public security and order in the community, mediation of civil disputes, handling of public affairs and public welfare undertakings in the community, as well as the management of the floating population and family planning and other functions. The multiplicity of community functions is determined by the diversity of community content and the multifaceted needs of community residents, but also a reflection of the community as a social entity. (3) The community is the basic place for people to participate in social life. Since the community is the most basic social ****similarity and the living base of the vast majority of social members, most of people's basic life activities are carried out within the scope of this community. Within the boundaries of the community, people are engaged in various occupational activities such as production and labor, business operation, culture and education, science and technology, social management, social services, etc., and in this way they obtain economic income as a source of livelihood for themselves and their families. Within the community, people mostly consume various means of living on a household basis to meet their daily needs for food, clothing, housing and utilities. Within the community, people have established a variety of interpersonal relationships through their long-term ****together life, and use these relationships to communicate with each other, exchange feelings, and ****together to solve life and ideological problems. In addition, the vast majority of residents, as full-fledged members of a community, enjoy the right to participate in community management, to elect people's representatives and to elect community officials within the boundaries of the community. In this sense, the community is also a basic place for people to participate in political life. Community as the basic place of people's life determines that it must have the appropriate facilities for activities. (4) The community is to settlements as their own dependence or material carrier. As an important concept in human geography and community studies, the word "Siedelung" means settlement according to the earliest German word. Human beings' search for a more ideal place to live and a base for various activities is a necessity for their own survival and development. Historically, the human habitat has gradually changed from temporary and mobile to fixed and permanent. Due to the group and social nature of human life, gradually formed a settlement composed of multiple houses - settlement as the main residential lifestyle. This shows that the settlement is the product of human activities to transform the environment, and with the progress of social and economic progress, its meaning and form also continue to extend and develop. Today, the term "settlement" is a place for living, living, resting and various social activities, but also a place for human production and labor; it includes both houses, streets, waters and squares for human habitation, as well as production and living facilities and land for production and labor related to the place of habitation. China's urban and rural settlements in the form of villages, towns, county towns and cities, etc., they are the community's reliance and material carrier. This is firstly manifested in the fact that the settlement is the place where the population is concentrated, and more than 95% of the population of China's urban and rural areas are settled and concentrated in various types of settlements. Secondly, the performance of the community is the people's economic activities of the concentration point and base, especially as the center of economic activity of the city, not only is the concentration of industrial production, but also a huge consumer center; some cities or the country or an administrative region of the political and cultural center. Once again, it is manifested in the fact that most of the constituent elements of a community are gathered in settlements, and people's daily life and social activities are mainly carried out within the geographical space of the respective settlements where they live. Fourthly, the settlement reflects the appearance and characteristics of a community, for example, in Pudong New Area of Shanghai, the appearance and characteristics of the modern business center show the appearance and characteristics of modern urban economy and life. The native kiln communities, which are mainly located on the Loess Plateau, not only reflect the fact that the loess of the Plateau is suitable for kiln excavation, but also reflect the fact that the economic situation in these rural areas is not yet well developed and that the living customs inherited from the past are still relatively prevalent. Therefore, we can recognize different types of community structures and their humanistic landscapes through various types of settlements. (5) Communities are developing and changing. Like other social phenomena, community is a product of human activities and develops with the development of society. Some scholars believe that in the long social development of mankind, the form of community life has gone through four stages of change: first, the formation of the Paleolithic era of mobility community; second, the emergence of the Neolithic era of semi-permanent village community; third, the formation of the age of civilization since the formation of the rural community; and fourth, the formation of the industrial revolution since the formation of the secondary and tertiary industries based on the new type of urban community. This view is too broad. In fact, strictly speaking, communities began with the emergence of agriculture, when people began to settle down and form villages. Rural communities were the earliest form of community to emerge in human society, and later, urban communities emerged on the basis of rural communities. Over thousands of years, both rural and urban communities have undergone a series of changes in their internal structure, social nature and so on. The development of the community is the result of a combination of social factors, of which the development of productive forces is the ultimate determining factor in promoting the development of the community.
