The Four Great Beasts of Ancient China
The four sacred beasts are the green dragon, the white tiger, the red bird, and the black basalt.
Green Dragon is the God of the East; White Tiger is the God of the West; Suzaku is the God of the South; Xuanwu is the God of the North, a combination of tortoise and snake.
Therefore, there is a saying that "the four spirits of the sky, the green dragon, the white tiger, the red bird, and the basalt, align the four directions, and the king controls the palace, palace, and pavilion according to the law."
In ancient times, the ancients divided heaven into four palaces: east, west, north and south, named after Qinglong (Canglong), White Tiger, Suzaku, and Xuanwu (a turtle-shaped god) respectively.
In fact, the sky is divided into four parts, which are formed by connecting the seven main stars in each part, and are named after their shapes.
In the east, the Jiao, Kang, Shi, Fang, Xin, Wei and Ji are shaped like dragons, so the East Palace is called Qinglong or Canglong; in the West, the seven stars Kui, Lou, Wei, Ang, Bi, Jiao and Ginseng are shaped like a tiger, so the West Palace is called White Tiger;
The well, ghost, willow, star, Zhang, Yi and Zhen couplets in the south are in the shape of birds and are called Suzaku; the seven stars in the north are Dou, Niu, Nv, Xu, Danger, Chamber and Wall, which are shaped like turtles and are called Xuanwu.
As a result, Qinglong, White Tiger, Suzaku, and Xuanwu became the four gods guarding the heavenly officials, warding off evil and regulating yin and yang.
Among the four gods, the green dragon and the white tiger are mainly regarded as gods to suppress evil because of their brave appearance. Their images often appear on palaces, palace gates, city gates or tomb buildings and their utensils. In the last case,
, the dragon no longer helps the tomb owner to ascend to heaven, but to deter evil spirits and protect the soul of the tomb owner.
The green dragon and white tiger have palms in all directions, the red bird and black tiger follow the yin and yang, and the four sacred beasts of the sky are blue dragon, white tiger, red bird, and black black tiger. Although they rarely appear in European and American fantasy, in Chinese and Japanese myths and legends, they are regarded as extremely noble.
