Xuzhen Village, Tang Tang Zhen, Fogang County is an ancient village with a long history. "Place Names of Guangzhou" contains: "Weizhen Village was built in Hongzhi period of Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1488 to 1505)". According to the "Family Tree of Liu Family in Huanjiang", "At that time, there were residents such as Liu, Yang, Gong, Shao, Deng and Zhejiang in the surrounding towns. Later, the population of Liu gradually grew, and the residents of his surname moved out one after another. Only Liu opened branches and scattered leaves in the surrounding towns. " From the early years of the Qing Dynasty, every year on the 15th and 16th of the first month, local women have a strange custom of "lion dancing", which has been passed down from generation to generation for more than 400 years. This traditional custom was recently included in the second batch of intangible cultural heritage list of the province.

There is a legend about the origin of "lion dance" circulating in the village. It is said that Liu Puzhen, the ancestor of the Liu family in Weizhen, was very poor when he was a child. From his hometown Longpan, he came to Tangtangwei, not far from Wei Town, to herd cattle for a rich man. An old feng shui master employed by the rich man's family saw that Liu Puzhen was considerate of himself and was grateful for his kindness. As a result, he was arranged to be adopted by a Shao family in Weizhen Village. And found a feng shui treasure cave "lion listening to drums" to give it to bury his father. Baodian is located on a lion-shaped hill by the river. The river is swift and the sound of water is like a drum, hence the name. After choosing the auspicious day, Liu Puzhen returned to Longpan to meet his father's golden skull. Because it was already late at night when I arrived in Longpan, I invited my mother Wu's golden skeleton by mistake in the dark. When something is wrong, everything is a foregone conclusion. Liu Pu was really annoyed, and finally the Feng Shui master pointed out the maze: it is God's will for a lion to become a lioness. Although the lioness is not as good as the lion, on the 15th day of the first month every year, as long as the women at home dance in front of the tomb, this cave can also keep your family prosperous. Although this is only a legend, it is not enough as conclusive evidence of the origin of the custom of "dancing with the lion", but it adds a little legendary interest to this traditional custom.

The lion dance is presided over by the oldest female elder in the village. The activity was attended by the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law of newly married or newly-added male families last year, and the props were the flower sheets brought by each family. "Lion Dance" is generally composed of a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, which means that mother-in-law and daughter-in-law are harmonious and maternal love is passed down from generation to generation. At noon on the Lantern Festival, a "lion dance team" composed entirely of women gathered in front of the worship hall of Liu's ancestral hall. With the sound of gongs and drums, the annual "lion dance" officially began. The stripes of flowers are arranged in a word and should dance to the rhythm of drums. My mother-in-law is in front, holding the two corners of the sheet as the lion's head, and my daughter-in-law is behind, dancing with her mother-in-law. This is a festival for women in the village. The woman becomes the protagonist, and the men in the village drag the children aside and become happy spectators.

Under the guidance of colorful flags and lion dance, the "Lion Dance" team first paid homage to the Liu Ancestral Hall and Zhenhai Temple in the village, and then set off firecrackers all the way through the village to congratulate the newly married and newly added people. Being "lion" to every household, first worship the door god and kitchen god, and then worship the newly-married big bed. After the worship, the enthusiastic host took out the prepared tea, sweet wine, rice cake, candy and red envelopes to thank them, and finally lit a string of long firecrackers for each other. With the progress of "lion dance", the joy of festivals and deep homesickness ripple in the countryside like spring water.

On the morning of the 16th day of the first month, the lion dance team will pay homage to each family in the reverse order of yesterday, to show fairness and justice. At noon, the lion dance team returned to the door of the ancestral temple. At this time, the empty space in front of the ancestral hall has been surrounded by people who came from inside and outside the county to watch. After the prayer ceremony presided over by the old woman, a giant grass dragon arranged by bundles of firewood was lit in the sound of gongs and drums, and the enthusiasm of the performers also burned. All the lions danced around the blazing flame, and the flying flowers shone like waves in the light of the fire. At this time, a group of young and strong women filed out with sticks and began to perform local traditional martial arts. But watching them jump up and down and walk away with sticks is quite heroic among women. In the midst of laughter, the "lion dance" activity reached its climax.

Women play a very important role in folk lion dance activities, which shows their important position in local social and cultural life. It was once called "the carnival of women in a hundred years". -The above videos, texts and pictures are selected from the Internet.
