Taiyuan Folklore

As one of the four major categories of folklore, "literary folklore" is an important aspect of a nation's traditional culture and the source of a nation's traditional culture. Taiyuan's folklore has a long history and is rich in splendor, and the custom of social fire is one of the most eye-catching wonders. Social fire, in fact, is commonly known as the red fire in Taiyuan. The ancient land of Taiyuan, long passed down a folk proverb, that is, "the people, to be happy, to catch up with the will sing to get red-hot." Of course, folk customs, due to geographical, historical, economic, transportation impact, with "ten miles of different winds, a hundred miles of different customs" characteristics. Take this proverb, in different places, although the same Taiyuan area, has a different inheritance content. For example, there are places called: "Zhuang family people, to be happy, singing opera, play red-hot." Some places say: "Singing opera, playing the red fire, the poor people look forward to this." In other places, it is: "Play the red fire, make the red fire, mother-in-law and dolls all family music." However, looking at the essence of the original is a: red-hot, in the minds of the working people, has an extremely important position, it is the concentrated expression of people's material and spiritual life, is the people's sincere pursuit of happiness. Therefore, the red fire has a vigorous vitality, and even over the centuries, increasingly rich, increasingly full, increasingly perfect.  Taiyuan's red-hot scale, form, content, life atmosphere is strong, local characteristics unique. Legend has it that it started in 947 AD in the village of Guzhai in the southern suburb of Taiyuan, where the sister of Liu Zhiyuan, the High Priest of the Later Han Dynasty, lived. It is said that when the imperial concubine went out, the gongs and drums were used to welcome her, and the tune played was "Liu Shui", which has been passed down from today. It is said that the tune played by the gongs and drums was from today's "Flowing Water", which means "Blessed as the East China Sea with long flowing water".  In fact, this legend may not stand up to scrutiny, and "flowing water" may not be "as blessed as the East China Sea and flowing water", but from these legends, at least we can know that the Taiyuan gongs and drums have been passed down from generation to generation and have produced fruitful and rich sets of tunes.
