What are the hybridization methods in commercial pig production?

(1) binary hybridization is the simplest hybridization method. By crossing two varieties, the commercial generation can obtain the individual heterosis of 100%. It is generally required that the male parent and the female parent should come from two different populations and have genetic complementarity. In China, local or farmed pigs are generally used as female parents and imported pigs as male parents.

(2) Three-way hybridization is a widely used hybridization method at home and abroad. Because the female parent is a binary hybrid, it can make full use of the heterosis of the female parent, and the final product can also make full use of the heterosis of the individual. Compared with binary hybridization, ternary hybridization can make better use of genetic complementarity, and the hybridization effect is obvious. Satisfactory results can be obtained by using local pig breeds as female parents, large white pigs or landrace pigs as the first male parents and Duroc pigs as the terminal male parents.

(3) Four-way hybridization is a mode of producing commercial pigs by mating binary hybrid boars with sows. Because the parents of commodity generation are hybrids, in theory, the heterosis of individual, father and mother can be fully utilized. Compared with the three crosses, the commercial pigs make better use of the genetic complementarity of their parents, and the hybridization effect is remarkable. This hybrid model has become the main way for some large companies to produce hybrid commercial pigs.
