How was China's national flag born?
On June 16, 1949, the Preparatory Committee for the New CPPCC decided to set up a committee for the preliminary selection of the national flag and national emblem designs, and from July 14 to August 15 of the same year, it published a notice of solicitation in the People's Daily and other newspapers.
During the first plenary session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in September 1949, the preliminary selection committee selected 38 patterns from the 3012 patterns received and issued them to all the delegates for discussion. After all the delegates discussed in groups, on the evening of September 25, Chairman Mao Zedong convened a consultative symposium on the national flag, the national emblem, the national anthem, the chronicle and the national capital.
In the discussion on the national flag, the meeting studied and decided to remove the sickle and axe symbol in the original design draft, which was highly ideological and similar to the Soviet Union's flag. The final design was a five-star red flag with a red background and four small stars arching over a large one.
