Types and Schools of Calligraphy

Types of Calligraphy can be broadly categorized into Zheng, Cursive, Clerical, Seal, Running and other forms

Jing Shu

Also known as "Regular Script" and "True Script". It is characterized by its square shape and straight strokes, and can be used as a model, hence its name. It began in the Eastern Han Dynasty. There are many famous writers of Regular Script, such as "Ou Style" (Ouyang Xun), "Yu Style" (Yu Shinan), "Yan Style" (Yan Zhenqing), "Liu Style" (Liu Gongquan), "Liu Style" (Yan Zhenqing), and "Liu Style" (Liu Gongquan). "(Liu Gongquan), "Zhao style" (Zhao Mengfu (Zhaoga page)) and so on.

Cursive

For the convenience of writing and a font. Began in the early Han Dynasty. At that time, it was commonly used as "Cursive Clerical", i.e., scribbling clerical script. Later, it was gradually developed to form a kind of "Zhang Cao" with artistic value. At the end of the Han Dynasty, Zhang Zhi transformed "Zhang Cao" into "Jin Cao", with a single stroke of the character. Clerical Script

Also known as "Clerical Characters" and "Ancient Books". It is a script based on the official script, which was created to meet the need for ease of writing. It was simplified from the Small Seal Script, and the rounded lines of the Small Seal Script were turned into straight and square strokes, making it easier to write. It is divided into "Qin Li" (also called "Ancient Li") and "Han Li" (also called "Modern Li"). The emergence of the official script was a major change in ancient writing and calligraphy.

Seal Script

It is the short form of the Big Seal Script and the Small Seal Script. The Big Seal Script refers to the Oracle Bone Script, the Golden Script, the Preliminary Script, and the Six Kingdoms Script, which have preserved the distinctive features of the ancient hieroglyphic scripts. The Small Seal Script, also known as the Qin Seal Script, was the common script of the Qin state, and is a simplification of the Big Seal Script.
