Plot introduction

The story takes place in London. Sean (simon pegg), who is nearly 30 years old, is an ordinary man who has accomplished nothing. His work has never been recognized by others. His friends are idle, and his love with his girlfriend is red. Everything seems to be unsatisfactory.

Sean and his friends Pete and Ed (Nick forest) live in a shabby and dirty house. They play video games and some annoying behaviors all day. Although Sean intends to stop infatuating with his girlfriend and correct his lazy habit of being confused and lacking self-motivation, he will still be laughed at by his colleagues and still can't be forgiven by his girlfriend. At the same time, he is unwilling to admit his relationship with his stepfather, although his marriage with his mother has lasted for 15 years.

It seems that life has passed so flatly, but an unexpected thing has happened. The whole city is occupied by a group of zombies, and normal people will become zombies if they bite them. Viruses and panic spread rapidly throughout the city. Sean woke up from a hangover and dragged Ed, who was playing video games, to rescue his girlfriend and mother. When they got together, they were surrounded by hordes of zombies, and now they must escape from the danger on their own.

In the battle with zombies, Sean saved his dying love with his girlfriend, and the danger made him realize the feelings of his stepfather and mother. At the same time, he also played an unprecedented leadership role in this battle. Maybe he wants to thank this disaster, because it, he is no longer the wayward teenager who has no goal, does nothing, doesn't want to take responsibility and doesn't care about his family.

Wonderful film review

Have you seen enough zombie movies? I believe there are not a few students who have seen n zombie movies like me, right?

However, this British-made movie is definitely different from all kinds of zombie movies you have seen before. When watching this movie, the biggest feeling is definitely not horror, but the faint British humor that permeates the whole film. I can't say whether you like this movie or not, but it's definitely not the Hollywood model that sees immunity. I can assure you.

The most successful part of the film should be the kind of humor that is completely different from the spoof of the United States and South Korea. There are too many funny things and jokes now, and few really talk about "humor". But this kind of humor can be seen everywhere in this film, such as Sean's half-sleepwalking when he went out shopping in the morning, such as Sean and Ed's "selective choice" when they attacked zombies with records, such as the "mirror image" meeting of two groups of fugitives on the street corner, such as the zombie imitation show before entering the bar, such as beating zombies with billiards clubs in the song of the Queen of Winchester Bar … and the final ending. This ending can definitely be said to "subvert" all zombie movies. The "unexpected ending" in Dawn of the Zombies some time ago can be regarded as no creativity and no surprise. I really admire the humor that English people can't express in words.

Director edgar wright also has a good grasp of the details and environment. The scene of Sean going out shopping twice in the film is really classic and interesting. When he went out, he pushed open the fence, was hit by a ball in the head, tripped on the sidewalk, picked up a drink, and left the front door unlocked when he went home ... Through the changes in the environment during the two shopping (bloody handprints, broken window glass, overturned traffic signs, zombies on the road ...), Sean remained unchanged, and the role of Sean was vividly portrayed, which made people laugh. He talked with his friend Ed, his girlfriend, his mother and his stepmother, bought flowers and threw them away, stepped forward at the critical moment, and when he settled down a little, he immediately thought of his mother and his girlfriend who had broken up ... These jokes were really designed seamlessly, putting a living Sean in front of the audience. These words and actions are definitely not the same, but full of personality. Watching this film, you will think that Sean is Sean, and definitely not others. By contrast, I'm really tired of some stereotyped images in American Hollywood movies.

Behind the scenes production

1999, British TV Channel 4 began the first season of the series Spaced, telling the funny life of young lazy people in London. As a result, Spaced not only received rave reviews, but also swept many TV awards, including the British comedy award, and also formed a cultural trend in the world. This dark horse TV series was created by director edgar wright, starring screenwriter simon pegg and producer Nira Park, and Shaun the Zombie is the collaboration of this iron triangle again.

In the TV series Spaced, there is an episode in which simon pegg's character is intoxicated by the computer game Resident Evil 2, and all the zombies are repelled. Wright and Peggy liked this episode so much that they came up with the idea of expanding it into a zombie feature film. Wright said, "We are all big fans of Dawn of the Zombies, directed by the horror master George A. Romero. In this episode, there is a scene where Simon kills a zombie with a shotgun. During the filming, we both looked at each other and thought of the same shooting method. "

Because Shaun the Zombie is an extended version of an independent story separated from TV series, the film continues its original sensitivity and humor, but it also extends the wider world with darker elements. Peggy said: "We don't want to continue a boring movie with the momentum of TV series. We want to be loyal to this type of film. Generally speaking, horror movies belong to men aged 16 to 35, but we want more audiences to see our movies. This is a bloody and horrible zombie movie, and it also has a comedy effect derived from characters and dialogues. "

The film story sets zombies attacking cities on a large scale, and terrorist violence occurs one after another, and people die one after another. Black comedies began to appear when describing the characters' reaction to the crisis. The center of humor comes from mocking the British, who have been boasting that even in the face of such a crisis, they have no intention of repentance. In addition, most of the characters in horror movies will show frightened expressions, while the characters in this film are even more indifferent.

Although this is a zombie film with a flash of humor, Peggy has repeatedly stressed: "Zombies are not funny, they are not the carrier of jokes, they are serious and vicious."

After finishing the second season of "A Space Walk", edgar wright and simon pegg started writing the script of this film on 200 1. They set out from the real idea and tried to combine movie stories with reality, because credible stories and characters all originated from reality.

The story of this film takes place in the north of London, just like the TV series Spaced. Wright explained: "Although British movies are imitating American movies and hope to build London into a sin capital like new york, this idea has never come true. So instead of taking piccadilly circus as the background, it is better to take photos in remote suburbs. Like the images on the big screen, Zombie Invasion was indeed filmed in New barnett and Crouchind. "

Wright, Peggy and Parker had a unique idea when they first started writing. In order to increase the authenticity of the characters, they invited actors to create characters together. Peggy said of her Sean: "His life is ordinary, and he tends to be satisfied himself. He needs to start a journey of growth and learn to take responsibility. His girlfriend Liz is much more active than him, so Sean can't be indifferent anymore. Anything can inspire him, such as traffic jams, hail and fires, and what he really encountered was a zombie attack. "

Kate ashfield, who plays Liz, said: "Liz loves Sean, but after living with him for many years, Liz has been looking forward to a change. They always go to Winchester and are always with Ed. She wants to do different things and go to different places, but Sean can't seem to do it. "

Nick frost, who plays Ed, once appeared in the TV series From a Distance. He said, "Ed is Sean's best friend. He's been living with Sean. Ed listens to Sean because Sean always thinks what he thinks. " Wright added: "The chemistry between Simon and Nick on the big screen is very real. Only a real roommate can feel this way. They are naughty like a pair of brothers and sisters. "

Director edgar wright's work attitude and ability surprised the actors. Frost said, "After work, he will joke with you like a good friend, but he will never laugh at work.". Surprisingly, he will remember all aspects of shooting a few weeks ago, and his brain is full of all kinds of information. " Jessica Stevenson said: "Edgar knew the effect he wanted before every shot started." He makes storyboards, is very careful and patient, and is also excellent in comedy. "

In order to find the actor who plays the zombie, the producer organized a public audition in London. Producer Nila Parker said: "In the preparation stage before shooting, Wright insisted on using audition activities to select zombie actors. At that time, the website of TV series Spaced received emails from hundreds of fans, who asked to play zombies in Sean Zombies. At that time, the audition scene was like the talent show Pop Idol. We recorded their zombie walking and biting actions and made a choice. "

The cast of this film includes professional actors, special actors, stuntmen and acrobats. In terms of zombie makeup, Wright chose the naturalistic style in Zombie Dawn. Although the makeup is simple, when dozens or even hundreds of people get together, the strong visual impact is still shocking enough. In addition, the action direction of the film strictly follows the director's intention, and every actor has received action training.

During the filming process, there were many times when the groans of zombies drowned out the dialogue of the main actors. Kate ashfield recalled: "One day, the staff of the sound department asked us if we could stop these zombies from making any noise when recording the actors' voices. Then we shoot again, and the voice of zombies appears again. The voice reminds me again that zombies can't make sounds, but they still can't make a remake. Because the actors who play zombies are too involved, as long as they hear the' action', they will start a conditioned performance. "

The crew used 10 1 1 extras, and 800 of them played zombies. At least 70% of these extras are fans of TV series Space and zombie movies.

The film was shot for four weeks in Ilya Studio (the legendary British studio, which has shot many classic English comedies), and then went to London for five weeks. Because the movie story takes place on weekends, the lighting and the weather must be consistent. However, everyone who has lived in Britain knows that it is quite difficult to do this, and even shooting night scenes in summer is full of challenges.

The locations chosen by the crew in London include Haegert Cemetery, Fuwei District and New Banna District in the northern suburbs of London, and Milwaukee in the south of London. It is conceivable that local residents are very interested in shooting. The shooting scene of the film is like a large amusement park. Some passers-by will stop and watch with relish, and some will even join in the fun and make a guest appearance as zombies for a day. However, some people complain that children nearby have seen groups of zombies and are easily frightened.

During the post-production, Wright found two partners who had worked in the TV series Spaced, the composers Daniel Mudford and Pete Woodhead. They used some special musical instruments to create an exciting musical atmosphere, including guitar, ring modulator, glass piano, electronic synthesizer of classical music and several percussion instruments.

Zombie Sean premiered in Britain in April 2004, and immediately won strong praise and box office success. The box office receipts far exceeded the popular British zombie movie "28 Days of Surprise" in 2002 and the remake of "Zombie Dawn" in the same year.

Wonderful tidbits

The daily salary of the extras who play unknown vampires in the film is 1 euro.

At the end of the movie, Sean and Liz are watching TV. The voice on TV said, "This virus was spread by infected monkeys, and now it has disappeared …" Liz turned off the TV without waiting for this sentence to finish. This comment mentioned the British zombie movie "28 Days of Surprise".

The zombie Sean and Ed found in their garden was Mary. The reason why Mary became a zombie was written into a short story, which was published in the British science fiction comic magazine "A.D. 2000"No. 1384, and published in July 2004 with the title "Something about Mary" by simon pegg and edgar wright.

The game Ed played in the film was Time Splitter 2.

Because the release date of this film is close to that of Dawn of the Dead in 2004, and the titles of the two films are quite similar, the distributor had to postpone the release of this film for two weeks until Dawn of the Dead was released in Britain.

Sean works for Furui Electronics, which is named after Ken Foree, an actor in Dawn of the Zombies.

The soundtrack of Zombie Dawn can be heard in many scenes in the movie.

When Sean and others rushed out of Leeds' residence, they all held various weapons in their hands, but only Sean hit some zombies, because only the cricket bat in Sean's hand was a prop, and the weapons in others' hands were all physical objects, so in order to avoid hurting the extras, Sean had to take the lead.

Zombies in pajamas are voiced by simon pegg.

When Liz refused to go to Winchester, Sean recommended many other bars. One of them is called "Shepherd", which is named after simon pegg's pub in Haegert. This bar was later closed and became a theme bar when it reopened.

Sean passed a sweeper on his way to the store before going to work. There was a news on the radio: the space probe named Omega 6 entered the atmosphere over southwest England a few days ago and finally fell to the ground and disintegrated. This passage alludes to 1968' s night of the living dead, where an aerial probe crashed in a small town in the United States, and the radiation it produced revived the dead in the cemetery.

A zombie wearing a yellow bicycle helmet can be seen in the film. He was played by Michael smillie, and Smile played a bicycle courier in the TV series Spaced.

George A. Romero watched the film in advance near his residence in Florida. In the film, Ed shouted on the phone, "We're coming to pick you up, Barbara." However, Romero didn't realize that this sentence came from night of the living dead, which he directed. Later, in a telephone conversation with edgar wright, Romero remembered the allusion of this sentence.

All the radio and TV announcers in the film are guest stars.

While browsing the yellow pages, Sean found the phone number of an Italian restaurant called "Fulci Restaurant", which alluded to the famous Italian horror film director Lucio Valcz.

Most of the posters in Sean's living room are from the records of Ninja Divine Comedy.

"Fuck" was said 77 times in the film.

The film left a deep impression on George A. Romero, so simon pegg and edgar wright later made guest appearances as zombies in Land of the Living Dead at the invitation of Romero.

When Sean walked out of the deli opened by Indians, the radio station playing Indian movies and songs suddenly began to broadcast the news. The announcer said in Hindi: People are waking up from their graves.

David walliams had hoped to play David in this film.

When Sean telephoned an Italian restaurant, the poor Italian on the phone was director edgar wright.

A (movie) fiasco

Every time Sean opens the refrigerator in the store, the camera always reflects on the refrigerator door.

When Sean walked into the store for the second time, the blue car on the roadside showed the microphone boom.
