Treatment of Colon Cancer

The treatment of colon cancer is a comprehensive program based on surgery, supplemented by chemotherapy, immunotherapy, traditional Chinese medicine as well as other supportive treatments, in order to increase the surgical resection rate, reduce the recurrence rate and improve the survival rate. Principles of surgical treatment: try to eradicate as much as possible, protect pelvic vegetative nerves, preserve sexual function, urinary function and defecation function, and improve the quality of survival. Surgical methods are as follows:

1. Right hemicolectomy is suitable for cancer of cecum, ascending colon and hepatic flexure of colon.

2. Left hemicolectomy is indicated for cancers of descending colon and splenic flexure of colon.

3. Transverse colectomy is indicated for cancer of the transverse colon.

4. In addition to resection of the sigmoid colon, descending colon resection or partial rectal resection should be performed for sigmoid colon carcinoma.

5. In the case of surgery with intestinal obstruction, if the patient's condition permits, a one-stage resection and anastomosis can be performed. If the patient's condition is poor, colostomy can be performed first, and radical resection can be performed in the second stage after the patient's condition improves.

6. The surgical principle of not being able to perform radical resection, when the tumor infiltrates widely, or cannot be resected when it is fixed with surrounding tissues or organs, and the intestinal tube has been obstructed or may be obstructed, short-circuit surgery can be performed, and colostomy can also be performed. If the distant organ metastasis and local tumor still allows resection, local palliative resection can be used to relieve the symptoms of obstruction, chronic blood loss, infection and poisoning.
