Characteristics of decorative patterns of painted pottery

Painted pottery patterns are characterized by dense lines and little change in thickness. Motion is represented by straightness of straight line, and rotation is represented by change of straight line direction. Because of the dense lines, the spiral patterns in this period are particularly powerful, thick and vigorous, like the spiral of the Yellow River, so they are also called vortex patterns. This dynamic pattern is often accompanied by regular horizontal lines to contrast static movements. Moreover, large points are often used to press the lines, which is rare in the previous painted pottery patterns, so that the lines with flowing feeling have a solidified effect and a relatively static feeling, which makes them appear static and dynamic, and increases the rhythm beauty of the patterns. The decoration of Majiayao-style painted pottery pays great attention to the arrangement of primary and secondary pictures, dynamic and static collocation.
